PCOS - Metformin side effects

ORIGINAL POST

Recently diagnosed with PCOS and on Metformin (3000mg a day) for the past week. Has anyone else suffered such awful side effects? I am constantly nauseous, some vomiting, no appetite and worst of all - seem to have an extremely heightened sense of smell. I can smell colleagues' bad breath from 100 paces and the mere whiff of cigarette smoke makes me gag. Walking down the street in smelly HK is currently an obstacle course.

The doc said that is normal and will go away "eventually" - any others experienced this and can tell me how long? I can't work like this and I have a rather unsympathetic boss..

I really feel for you as I went through the same thing. You should talk to your doctor about starting off on a smaller dose. I started with 1000mg / day and slowly went up to 3000mg/ day in about 1 month time. Also, take the pills after you eat as that will make the nauseousness a bit better. Although Metformin has terrible side affects it really works. In 4 months I've lost 20 lbs and I finally got my period naturally.

Hang in there...it usually takes about a month before you feel normal again.

HI, anyone after Laparoscopy stil taking Metformin ?

I had to stop taking Metformin even 1000mg / day as it was so terrible feels like faint unless I sleep 3 times a day...

or choose to had it at night with 2 tabs with meals....sweet juices help to wash away "metallic taste".

I had lost 7kg after first started this Metformin within 1 mth....which is very borderline of my weight to 55kg from 62kg...

Eventually, my doc stop prescribe me this meds as it doesn't help me to ovulate within 1 mth...went to laparoscopy on 20 days ago (all went well)...besides, the "Metformin" is for diabetic patient or PCOS BUT it doesn't help me so had to stop.

afterall, this surgery could help to diagnose any fibroids, polyps, or endo....clear the tubes blocked....so i feels better.

regards,

Thanks for the sympathy and recommendation, I will stick to it - 20 lbs weight loss would be a nice incentive! My doc lowered the dose to 1500mg and I feel slightly better, although still feeling a bit queasy and have zero appetite for the first time in my life, which is kind of strange.

Hi

You can start with as low as 500mg and increase gradually over a few weeks to the full dose.

You can also ask your doctor about the XR version - that is extended release version that you take the full dose at night with a snack or with dinner. The reduction in side effects is incredible.

All the best!

yes i too had the horrible side effects, mine also included very urgent trips to the loo so i stayed home till i got use to the meds b/c of this! I found snacking helped, i made sure i never felt hungry as that is when i felt so sick and then i was too sick to eat. It does get better i can't remember how long it too me but i do remember my body got use to it.

Hi, please consider having your vitamin D status checked with a 25-hydroxy vitamin D test. There are now a number of studies that link PCOS and vitamin D deficiency. You can search the internet for more information, here is one below;

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disease seen only in

humans and is classically characterized by polycystic ovaries,

amenorrhea, hirsuitism, insulin resistance, and obesity.

Animal studies have shown that calcium is essential for oocyte

activation and maturation. Vitamin D deficiency was highly

prevalent among 13 women with PCOS, and supplementation

with 1,500 mg of calcium per day and 50,000 IU of vitamin D2

on a weekly basis normalized menstruation and/or fertility in

nine of nine women with PCOS-related menstrual irregularities

within three months of treatment.
