How is UPMG-Guangzhou?

I am in my 22nd week of pregnancy, and we are suddenly moving in less than a month to Guangzhou. I am still debating about delivering in HK or Gz. Delivering in HK without a home to come back to is not an easy task. At the same time, I don't know Gz.

Can someone tell me how UPMG is? The website gives a lot of information and looks nice. But does someone have some personal experience?

Fuzzylogic, what is your insurance like? A lot of women from GZ go to HK and deliver at the Matilda - they have serviced apartments there that you can stay in whilst waiting to go into labour.

Otherwise, I know women who have had babies at the VIP birthing centre and haven't heard any bad complaints to be honest. I think the biggest fear that puts most women off though is that should your baby need emergency treatment it would be transferred to a local hospital. However, the same applies at the Matilda in HK, that should an emergency situation arise you'd be transfered to a government hospital.

Do you know where you'll be living in GZ? I suggest you try and come along to the playgroup and pick the brains of other Mummies here.

BTW I had my baby in HK (but government hospital) and had birth certificate, passport and visa all processed in 4 days so we could bring her back home to Guangzhou.

Good Luck

Spicegal,

Hi. Tks so much for ur reply. I never knew that we cud deliver in HK without an ID card! ( We will be losing that when we leave the HK job). I am already registered at Pamela Youede in Chai Wan cos at that time we did hv an ID card.

Its a great idea u gave about living in a serviced apt while delivering. I have a few more questions.

So did u have an ID card to deliver?

Also, when did u come to HK to live here? In the 37th week or something?

Transporting a 5 day old baby is not dangerous for its immunity?

How do I contact the playgroup in GZ?

Hi again,

I'm a HK permanent resident so we kept our flat on in HK so I could stay/go back and deliver there (at QMH). Also we had no insurance so the cost of keeping the flat on was cheaper than a private delivery.

I'm not sure of the practicalities of still delivering in a gov't hospital if you've declared that you've permanently left HK. You can still deliver in Government hospitals without an ID card but you pay private prices and have to pay up front I think.

If you have insurance then check if it'll cover staying at the Matilda serviced apartments.

I went down to HK permanently around 37 weeks. For coming back to GZ we hired a car and driver so didn't have to do battle on the train with a new born.

The playgroup details are on the website of www.gwic.org. I'll send you a pm too.

Ask Dani R here on the list. She had her baby 6 months ago at Mathilda and lives in GZ. You don't have to have a HK ID to deliver there.

The VIP clinic inGZ is very clean and they do help you to have a western birthing experience. Docs and nurses do speak English too.
