Baby Bjorn

ORIGINAL POST

I am deciding to buy a baby carrier. Does anyone have any advice whether I should choose the Baby Bjorn Air or Baby Bjorn Active? For my older children I used the Chicco carrier and it never did my back any good. Hopefully after reading and observing most mothers use the Baby Bjorn, it will be a worthwhile purchase.

The Baby Bjorn range is supposed to be the beat. After doing some reading the BB Active is highly recommended as it provides greater support the the baby's neck and back.

I just got an Ergo which is very comfortable. I think the BB you can only use while the baby is very small. Or you could try a cloth sling which is more versatile and less sweaty for the baby (and you).

I saw on BB website that they have a few models. Where can I have a try on all models? Mothercare? B2B?

And where to get a baby sling other than buying online?

I had the first style baby bjorn with my first, used it until she was 20 months and then gave it away, basically threadbare :-) Absolutely loved carrying her in it and we went everywhere. I was just in B2B looking at the line again....I think you're right nicam, the choice for me was between the "air" and the "active". I chose the "air" as it drove me nuts first time around how sweaty my baby got through the summer months. I'm comfortable with the decision as I have a strong back and never had problems with the first model we had. BUT if you're prone to back ache, you should probably go for the "active", the people I've talked to who have it say it does do a much better job supporting the lower back.

(Btw, if you get just the standard model, Western Trading (in Central) has them for $200 cheaper than B2B's. Western Trading won't be getting anymore "air" or the "active" in until October though, apparently sold out in Sweden.)

Go to www.thebabywearer.com for a complete review of every sling, wrap, and carrier under the sun! The BB doesn't get good reviews however, due to back strain of the mother and concerns of compression of the baby's developing spine and hips.

I guess you just have to try them out and see what works best for you!

i use the a hand me down baby bjorn (the dark blue one). i love it and so does my bub but if i had to buy my own, i would get the new one that is not too bulky as bub can get quite warm in the original one!

www.Nappypooh.com sells slings and so does www.doubibou.com - both are fairly local (HK/Macau). Nappypooh also does baby wearing meetings once a month so you can go and try some slings and ask for advice and recommendations from others.

if you're more petite, the baby bjorn active has significantly longer straps - they go all over. Some of my more petite friends found the active too big for their frames.

Thanks for all your replies. I went to Mothercare today and tried on the BB Active - totally comfortable on my back. Btw, does B2B sell the BB Air?

Yes, they have loads of them, all in grey and white with red piping and for something like $800 (The Active has pretty long straps too)

I've just been to Western Trading over the weekend. Yes they sell BabyBjorn at a much lower price than Mothercare and B2B and they have more colors available too! They don't have the Air in stock now but you can order. I prob would get the Air coz HK weather is just too hot for an active. It'll definitely get hubby and baby sweating all over!

How many weeks old was your baby before you started using your BBs? Mine is only 2 weeks but is already lifting her head a lot but still requires head and neck support. Don't really want to take her out until I am comfortable with her being carried in the BB.

Or perhaps a cloth sling may be a better option for now??

My little guy was only just over 5lbs at birth, so it took about 6 weeks for him to get up to the recommended 10lbs for the Baby Bjorn. So that was when we first used the BB. It also meant that his head was a lot more steady than earlier on.

A lot of people I know used something like a mayawrap sling for their newborns, but ours only ever went out in the carseat. Not sure why... Just happened that the carseat was most convenient for the places we went!

yep, we are using the maxi cosi carseat for our excursions so far. She loves it and drops off to sleep easily in it.
