Where and how do we start the adoption process in Hong Kong

Hello,

My wife and I have been in Hong Kong for 3 months now and we are looking to adopt our second child. We adopted our now 3 year old girl two years ago from mainland China. We were living in California at the time. We are now HK residents and we heard that it's not that difficult to adopt a local child here in HK. Is this true? We had an extremely difficult time doing out of the U.S., as it took 5 years to finally get our little girl.

How do we get started, and where do we go to begin the paperwork process? Also, we would like to meet other families that have adopted. Are there any events here in HK where families get together? Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Gabriel

Looking to meet other families, try Adoptive Families of Hong Kong at www.afhk.org.hk . They have social events and informative guest speakers. Good luck.

You must call the social welfare department to get into their initial workshop but I believe you have to have been living in HK for at least a year. And the process is long here too. We are going on close to two years and we still haven't been matched with a child.

Contact the social welfare department, the procedure is very straight forward and yet thorough. How quick? We completed all the paper work and compulsary workshops in 5 months, then we were on the matching list" for another 7 months. You do have to be resident in the country for 1 year to qualiify, but I believe you can attend the workshops and start the paper work before then, speak to the SWD they are very helpful. (at one of our workshops there was a couple who had only been in Hk a couple of months). How quick to be matched is based on how open-minded you are in your adoption criteria, if you say "unacceptable" to children from problem backgrounds, or you want a girl, or a very young abay maybe you have a long wait

Great! Thank you for this information. I will look into the SWD for additional information.
