Weight gain--how much is right?

Hi everyone,

I'm a little confused about what my targeted weight gain during pregnancy should be because the numbers I hear seem to be all over the map:

While most of the books/sites say 30-35 pounds, I know people who gained as few as 15 pounds and as many as 80...so is there in fact a (quite large) healthy/acceptable range?

Also, how big a factor is height, i.e. if I'm super tall (which I am!) does that have any implications for what I should or should not gain?

Of course I want to gain whatever weight my baby needs...but I also want to be careful not to go overboard. I know I could push my doctor for a firmer answer (I tried!) but he seems wary of giving me an exact target for some reason (have others of you been given a target by your doctors?)

Thanks!

Wishing & Hoping,

I'm 12 weeks pregnant and have gained 2 kg already - bit concerned. In the book 'What to expect when you're expecting' it says total average weight gain is 13.5 kg. I've got a doc appointment on Thurs, I'll ask for a target, see what he says. Will let you know.

I've noticed HK doctors not saying anything as well - none of my friends were given a target weight - and some gained 25 kg or more.

I'm in the "small weight gain" category - around 8 kg both pregnancies - but I'm a bit "rounder" to begin with. I'm not short (5'5") but I wasn't to thin to start...and so my weight just didn't seem to go up to much.

I would say if you are tall and skinny you would gain more - but it will look like less because you have more surface area to distribute it.

the standard rule of thumb is around 3/4 lb every week. My friend told me that doctors in Japan are REALLY anal about this aspect...

you don't need to overeat - the saying "I'm eating for two" REALLY doesn't apply. Eat what you need, eat healthy, don't over indulge and what your body needs to gain it will.

I've only been preggers once before and I put on a rather large amount of weight - about 40lbs. Well, to me that's rather large as during the whole pregnancy I didn't eat too much and I stayed healthy and fit by going to the gym.

I put on minimal in my first trimester, and it was really in the last three months that it really came on but I gave up weighing myself anyway.

Everyone is different and every pregnancy is different. They say you should really eat only 300 calories extra a day whilst pregnant but how realisitic is that?

docotrs here don't keep to weight gain charts I have also noticed, but they do take your blood pressure and your urine every time you go, and I would suspect they would also tell you if you do look like you are blowing up a little too fast..

Good luck - w&H as you say, don't deprive the baby of what it needs - you can always lose it afterwards!

The 'western' books seem to be generous in the weight gain, while our local HK Doctor always says... 'oh too much'

Now a friend goes to the same doctor, and for health reasons she was NOT gaining enough, and he was quick to tell her and give her 'goals' of how much she needed to gain. In the end, she never did meet his goals and had a lovely healthy FAT baby. (while our baby from fat me was skinny! ha ha)

At the end of the day, yes it sucks to gain weight, but you need to gain some, and everyBODY is different...

The important thing is staying active, and healthy, eating well and exercising after (pilates for the tummy).

I divide pregnant women into 2 basic categories - basketball women (ie, only gain a belly) and I officially hate all of these women ha ha, as I am a Michellen Man balloon... I gain everywhere.

With my first 2 i plumped out like a ballon legs got big and i gained roughly 50 lbs per pregnancy. now i am 27 weeks along and ive only gained about 10kg. I only have a belly. first 2 were girls this ones a boy perhaps.... due to gender pregnancy is different? :) who knows.

I say about 30 lbs is normal for pregnancy.... anything over 60 isnt. dont try to not gain cuz then you might have problems. if your worried about being fat afterwards try eating only healthy foods and exercise after babys born.

dont worry about it too much. let your body do its thing. Stressing about it isnt good try to relax and see how things go.
