Hi,

I'm on my 7th week and since yesterday been having fever at 38.5 degrees celsius. I have not taken any medication but only putting down the temperature with home remedies...cold pack, shower and "vinegar". Should I start taking medication now??? Please share your experience, if any. Thank you

My OBGYN made me go and see him when I had a fever. He then did a scan and spent a lot of time checking the heart beat to make sure the fever did not damage anything.

He also insisted I take panadol to keep the fever down so it didn't cause any damage.

73,

I would suggest going to see the doc. If you decide not to, please take regular panadol (not the extra strength or the one for colds/flus).

agreed. my OB always advised me to take panadol (normal) to reduce fever if i ever had a fever. it's no good to get overheated when you are preggers cos bubs can't regulate his own temperature. so please take some panadol and go and see your doc!

Dear crj, havefaith and sashimi girl,

thanks for your advices. unfortunately, i took the panadol extra strength cause thats the only one i have at home (one tablet) as instructed by my doctor (only talked to her on the phone). The problem is, we just moved in to singapore from hongkong and i dont know any doctor here. Doctor adviced me to see a GP for the fever. I am soooo worried....

Keep taking the panadol to keep fever down and get to a GP, the GP can recommend an OBGYN

WHEELYMATE and others in Sing can also suggest a good OBGYN.

this is not in lieu of doctor's advice - but, my father is an OB, and i had very high fever with my second pregnancy, around the 8th week and I was pretty stressed about it. Panadol wouldn't even bring it down enough...

and my father (an OB in the US) said that the although it's not GREAT, the embryo could probably handle it, as long as it wasn't prolonged.

Had a healthy baby (although she was born 4 weeks early)

hi 73,

welcome to singapore.

not sure about your insurance or financial status but in general, expats in singapore tend to deliver in gleneagles, mt. elizabeth or thomson medical centre. how it works is that your obgyn will tend to deliver in selected hospitals e.g. mine has his clinic in mt.e and will only deliver at mt. e and mt alvernia.

what i can suggest is that your visit the websites of the hospitals mentioned and they should have a directory of doctors who have clinics in these hospitals.

for more support, why don't you go visit the mother and child centre at tanglin mall. they provide antenatal classes/yoga classes and when i attended classes for #1, i remember they had namecards on display for recommended obgyn at their frontdesk. tanglin mall is also a baby/maternity shopping haven of sorts.

i remember being very sick somewhere between the 1st and 2nd tri of pregnancy...serious cold and what not. thankfully no fever so survived on lots of hot honey and lemon. do visit a GP if you don't have a gynae yet if you are having a fever and very worried BUT PLEASE emphasise to the doctor that you are pregnant so that he doesn't prescribe any meds that could be harmful to the baby.

i know you are only 7 weeks but there is also a new mothers support group that you can think about joining later to make new mummy friends.

i just want to say that i wouldn't want to recommend a specific doctor for you to try because i don't know what your thoughts are about birth plans, etc. this is because while you can be assured of the professionalism of local doctors, i cannot promise that all will be supportive should you have less common (at least in singapore) ideas about birthing e.g. water birth/home birth....only selected doctors in singapore will agree to that. e.g. my doctor is not the sort who will even support the presence of doula. i trust him with my life and my baby's but that's how it is and since i just want a "normal" delivery with the presence of my hubby, that was not an issue for me. it might be for you.

speaking of doulas, you can try four trimesters or parentlink (do google for their websites)...if that's part of your birth plan, might be a good idea to talk to them and they might recommended docs that are supportive of doulas.

crj, thanks for the push. i took panadol last night and the fever is gone! but didnt get to sleep cause i was worried, worried, worried!

hkchoichoi, thanks for sharing your experience, it made me feel good really!

wheelymate, unfortunately, my insurance doesnt cover maternity. i've been to mt elizabeth for my first check up and i just wanted a normal delivery with my husband by my side..just like you. however, would you know what are the usual maternity packages here...on the average?

thank you all really!

hi 73,

glad you are feeling better.

i can't really comment about rates as my doctor comes recommended by my mum who has known him for 30 years. i definitely got a good deal from him.

you should shop around. alot of gynaes provide packages, if you like the first doc you went, ask for information on costs and then enquire with a couple more? as for the hospital stay itself and the nursery charges, etc, individual hospital websites will provide a (estimated) breakdown of the costs.
