obstetrician recommendations

Hi all,


Im looking for recommendations for an Obstetrician in Kowloon.


Also, my understanding is that Obstetricians are experts in obstetric complications wheras midwives are experts in normal births. If this is the case how does one find out if an obstetrician is needed? Is it possible to book midwives in private hospitals? Any recommendations for midwives would also be much appreciated.

An obstetrician is a doctor with specialist training. A midwife is a nurse with specialist training in birth etc.

If you decide to deliver at a private hospital, you must sign up with an OB first. If you decide to go public, you will see both midwives and an OB that will be assigned to you. In either case, you will ALWAYS see an OB, it's not really a choice, just a routine part of care.


I am not sure, but i doubt in Hong Kong you can 'choose' a homebirth (therefore only having a midwife), but i could be wrong.

We are looking for a private hospital in Kowloon. The Hong Kong Baptist hospital is most conveniently located, but we are in two minds about it. We have heard that they take in the highest number of mainlanders, and that its not a very "peaceful" environment there.


Also, if we decide on the baptist hospital, do we need to find an OB that is registered at that hospital?

I had my first two children in 2008 and 2009 in the Baptist Hospital. I thought it was fine, a little strange with the timings assigned to you as to when you can see your baby through a glass panel or when you can go to feed them but it was a pleasant experience. I am currently pregnant with our third and last baby and I went to the Baptist Hospital to take a look and I really didn't like it, there was security everywhere which made the corridors even more narrow and speaking with my OB, he said it was pretty much becoming last choice for a lot of local/ non-mainland women. I asked about the security and apparently lots of sales people were going into the wards to try to sell mainland mothers 'packages' where the person would help sort out all the paperwork, passports etc. You also need to pay the deposit by 8 weeks and we thought that it seemed a bit early so I went with St. Teresa's Hospital in the end as we didn't have to pay the $6000 deposit until the 16th week and I really liked the spaciousness there. It was the next most affordable option and a lot less crowded. I actually went there for a scan yesterday and had a very pleasant experience.

Hi rob_378. I see a private doc in Central who charges $800 for consultation and $400 for a scan (We pay $1200 per month). His name is Dr Danny Kong based in Lansing House. He delivered our first two children and will be delivering our third. I don't know any doctors in St. Teresa's but had a scan there once, the staff were fantastic. Dr. Kong delivers in Kowloon whereas many doctors in Central only deliver on HK Island. Hope that helps.
