Hi i am soon gonna become a Dad and my wife has gone to India have the baby. We have been married for an year now and this is gonna be our first baby and we are thrilled about it.

However a situation has suddenly developed and it is worrying me like hell. My wife had all the tests in Tung Chung maternal Center and Princes Margaret hospital and everything was absolutely fine according to the Docs. Her blood test for Rubella Antibodies was Positive (tested in the first month of pregnancy). However the Doc in India is insisting tht HK doctors should have done rubella IGM test. Now my wife is in 8th month of pregnancy and all the movements of the baby and feutus size seems perfectly fine. They did a test on her blood recently and found out that the blood had a count of 21 IgG and 0.12 IgM

I am very scared because i read on the net that IgM causes abnormalities in the baby or weak vital organs upon birth. However the Doctors here have reassured me that there is no need to worry at all.

Please advise me

1. Don't believe everything you read on the net

2. Trust your doctors

3. IgM is an antibody group. It is a defence against infection, or the result of an infection, not the cause of the problem

Ya but why did'nt Doc here in Hong Kong tested her for IgM ? They told me once they test that IgG is positive there is no need to check IgM in the early (& most Imp phase) of pregnancy. However Indian docotor is adamant that it is a regular practice to check for IgM as well.

May be since i am not into the field of medicine i am getting overanxious. Well my wife also had an unltrasound here in HK when she was 5 month pregnant and then too the doc assured us everything is fine

Pls tell me should i stop worrying???

Yes do stop worrying. I think the range of tests that are performed during pregnancy vary widely from place to place.

It seems to be normal for the medics in one place to insist on a set of tests (and a certain protocol on what to do and what not to do) to perform that are very different from what medics in another country recommend.

I'm indian married to an italian and now we live in china - you have no idea how different the advise is from one place to another. Really, the care that my sister and sister-in-law in india recieved is so different from what my sister-in-law and friends in italy have recieved or are recieving... not to mention friends in Hong Kong.

I think the doctor in india is a bit irresponsible - he could have asked if the test was done - and then when he was told that the test had not been done - he could've just said oh well it would've been better to have had it done and left it at that.

Really doctors who increase anxiety levels of expecting parents are just no good - IMHO.

Tell your wife to change doc or just get a second opinion and relax.

Thanks Goddess

Actually our family has'nt told anything to my wife since they did'nt want her to be worried at such a crucial stage. It was only me who was losing sleep over this matter.

But i am finally feeling a lot better after

reading your comments.

Thanks Again
