Pregnancy 101 tips

ORIGINAL POST

We've learned just one week ago that she is pregnant. This would be our first. Any tips or key advise on some things to be doing at this stage would be helpful. Examples:

1. Dietary activities (things she should be eating, should avoid eating? I heard folic acid is good, fish is bad)

2. Good hospitals in Beijing that you trusted? (Beijing United?)

3. Any daily routines we should expect or be doing that will keep the fetus safe?

4. Any things that your doctors told you you did wrong or right in the first trimester?

5. Any problems flying in the first three months?

6. How often should we make trips to the hospital for checkups (imagine that Beijing United would advise)

7. Any other thoughts?

Thanks

MultiVitamins with at least 400 Folic Acid, if you can't find ask your OBGYN for Materna.

Drink lots of water, eat healthy if you can.

No alcohol, caffeine.

Beijing United - absolutely!

If you currently exercise try to continue, if you don't this is not the time to start, but gentle walking and stretching are great as is swimming throughout the entire pregnancy.

You can fly no problem.

Your doctor will advice regarding checkups - usually once a month until 8th month, then every two weeks, then every week.

Sign up for pre-natal classes to take them in the 7th month or so.

Don't get sucked into the 'hype' and buy 100 things you don't need -try to keep it simple.

Books - there is so much info on the internet, not necessary really. But Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy is really funny and not a 'guide' more of a firend to make you laugh.

Remember, morning sickness does not last forever, and pregnancy pains don't either - so hang in there.

If you go for a foot massage, tell them you are pregnant.

Take photos, relax, swim, go out for nice meals, and sleep a lot!!!

There are certain points on your foot that you don't want to be pressed in the first trimester. And in the last trimester there are points you WANT to be pressed, especially the last few weeks as they are said to help with brining on labour

True, not true... I don't know... but I love my foot massages and I know that some friends avoid them like the plague when pregnant while others flock to them.

I'll also add, that since they know I am pregnant, they also spend some time on my hips and lower back which is fabulous and exactly the spots they taught us at Annerley as good points for your partner to rub!

why is fish bad? Fish is very good for the fetus because of the oils it brings. She can eat any food if she is careful to the following: she must not eat anything raw (meat, fish, smoked salmon, smoked ham...), wash thoroughly all vegetables and fruits that are not cooked, eat only pasteurised or cooked cheese, eggs must be well cooked (the yolk must be all well cooked, not even partly). The thing to keep in mind: she's not eating for 2, but she must eat better quality food.

For the vitamins, the doctor gives me Materna.

As for the sports, she must walk at least 30 mn/day. Otherwise, swimming or stretching is very good too. I do yoga for myself.

For flying, always ask the doctor before having a trip, especially if the flight is long. If her pregnancy is normal, she can fly with no problem. I, myself, flew from HK to Seoul in the very beginning of my pregnancy. Then, to Australia (Sydney and Melbourne), at the end of the first trimester. But each time, I asked the doctor before leaving.

Xiyatu,

When I was pregnant with my first, one of the first things my hubby did was to order two books on pregnancy from Amazon.com (we were living in Saudi Arabia at the time). Also, there is a wealth of info on the internet, many, many good websites you can get info from. I signed up with babycentre.co.uk (it's free) and they regularly sent me info and updates based on my stage of the pregnancy and they continued to send after the baby was born (with relevant info based on baby's age). I did the same for my second child, and I now get two regular emails from them for both kids.
