dye test for fallopian tube

i was told by dr.ho's nurse that if i do the dye test, i would have to skip one month of "trying" as the chemicals would still be left inside and it could be harmful to the fetus. i was going to take the test, but decided not to in the end because i didn't want to skip a month.

however, it seems like in korea, the doctors say it's ok to conceive right after the test.

are hk doctors being more cautious, or do they use a different kind of chemical?

any experience on this?

The test is called a hystero-salpingogram, radio-opaque dye is injected through the cervix and if the tubes are open will flow through the tubes. We usually do it right after the period so that there is no chance of a pg being present BUT if there has been a very early ovulation the egg and possobly the Embryo will have been exposed to radiation during the test, that is the problem not the dye.

ok but whats the difference between that and having your tubes flushed with water? I'm pretty sure there was no dye used when i had it done.

magic8,

I had the dye test here on HK and was given the same advise as you, that was we should avoid conceiving for that month as the remnents of the dye would be harmful to the fetus.

i also had the dye test done with dr ho and yes, the advice was that we should try in that month because of the radiation and chemicals in the system. if you were advised to get it done, i suppose you should go ahead with it so that you rest assured that the problem isn't there. btw, it's not a very pleasant experience...

I repeat it is the radiation not the dye that is the main problem, With the flushing, which is an old but still valid technique, you do not have X-rays taken.

I did the dye test last year. The doctor did not mention about not trying for a month. My tubes were OK but was still unable to conceive and eventually went for IVF.

expat2006, I went staight back to work, the procedure is not pleasant but I had no discomfort after that i remember. I was given pain killers by my doctor but didn't need to use it.
