if she wants the baby, good prenatal care is important and her doctor will be able to advise on all specifics and risks

I think the standard rule of thumb is that if you were fit before you were pregnant you can exercise at 70% of your original rate...speed, distance and whatnot. I ran throughout both of my prenancies and had healthy babies both times.

Western medical opinion agrees with the two posts above, but fertility specialists--who deal primarily with women who are having difficulty with achieving or maintaining a pregnancy--will strongly advise against running. In fact, if her ob were a fertility specialist, she'd probably be advised to refrain from ALL exercise until safely out of the first trimester. For anyone who exercises daily or regularly, it's really hard to believe that's necessary. But maybe it is, and, having suffered two miscarriages in the last 18 mo, I have a much more conservative view now than I used to.

I was repeatedly advised not to anything that would significantly increase my body temperature, so breaking into a sweat was out. That said, my sister ran throughout 2 pregnancies, and has 2 perfect children.

Some people always need to be in control. If she is one of these, she may be trying to convince herself that she doesn't have to turn her life upside down, that she is still in control. If this is the case, she may have a bit of a surprise in store...

I get so tired here of people saying:
'You're still going to yoga (for example)? Is that safe?'
'You're eating xxx? Is that safe?'
'You're wearing xxx? Is that safe?'
Honestly, if a friend is doing something that is obviously (proven) unsafe - then perhaps you could comment, but really, as a friend, the best thing you could do with the unsolicited pregnancy advice is keep it to yourself. Sorry if this is a little blunt, but unless you are an obstetrician/fertility specialist, you and your friend have access to exactly the same information, and she, at the age of 42, can probably make her own decisions.

I know plenty of people doing marathons and triathlons when pregnant and the baby is perfectly normal. I used to swim a mile 3 times a week without any problems.
It all depends on your pre pregnancy fitness.
