Miscarriage - suction and evacuation

ORIGINAL POST

Anyone had this procedure recently? I was 7 weeks pregnant and had to go through this last Thursday and although I had a bit of pain afterwards it wasn't too bad and I didn't really need pain relief. Now a few days later I am getting quite bad cramps and taking lots of painkillers! Seems strange for the pain to be delayed so just wanted to know if others experienced similar. I cannot find much info online, not sure how new the procedure is compared to a D&C as I can find lots of info on what to expect after that. Thanks.

GinnyMc,

Sorry to hear about your loss. I have gone through the same, but worst still quite a number of times as I have unexplained recurrent miscarriage.

After a D & C, pain or cramping should die down pretty soon as the tissues should have been successfully passed out. Usually, it's the remaining tissues that will cause pain and cramping. You should phone your doctor and tell him your symptoms. One time after the D & C, I bled very little but suddenly after a couple of days, I have intense cramping and bleeding. I phoned up the doctor and he asked me to see him immediately and he found out there are remaining tissues causing the cramping and bleeding and have to do another mini scrapping in his office immediately ( to avoid another D & C). My advice is phone your doctor !

GinnyMc,

Your suction and evcaution should be similar to D & C (i.e. the mini scrapping in the clinic mentinoed in my last thread to you) - it's not a new procedure. My reply applies the same.

Thanks chipmonk, sorry to hear you have been through similar more than once.

I thought the suction method was supposed to cause less pain and less chance of anything being left behind than the scraping. Will phone the Dr in the morning, although not sure how successful that will be on a public holiday!
