Apart from Mustela and Baby Johnson products are there any other baby skin care products available? Some people have pointed out that Baby Johnson and Mustela products are too fragranced and not good for babies with sensitive skin. A friend of mine has recommended baby products from WELEDA as their products are made with 100% natural ingridients but unfortunately I am not able to find WELEDA products in HK...

Mustela & Johnson products are among the best-sellers because they ARE popular with mothers (and presumably with babies also, else they'd let their mothers know and they in turn wouldn't buy them). Does your baby have skin so sensitive that those two brands are unsuitable? If not then I'd stick with what are both (IMHO) very good products. But there again, our baby obviously doesn't have 'sensitive skin'.

Kheils has a new baby line that is scent free.

But keep in mind, you don't need to put a lot of 'stuff' on your baby.

Our baby is almost 8 months.

Daily Bath - just water, once a week we use a small amount of shampoo. (we have used less than 15% of a small bottle in 8 months!)

Daily Massage - we use grapeseed oil

Nappy Cream - only used if he starts to get a rash, we use aquaphor or kheils or aveeno (bought in USA). But saying that, he has RARELY had any type of rash, so we barely use anything.

Wipes - Wellcome First Choice brand nad Kirkland (at Gateway) have almost no smell.

Personally, I find J&J and Mustella smell very strong, I don't think the baby minds, but I am particularly sensitive to smells and don't like it too much.

"Mustela & Johnson products are among the best-sellers because" because they are mass-marketed, and available in every supermarket (for J&J) and every baby store (for Mustela).. it doesn't mean there are better... but your friend (for Chrispy) is right saying that Weleda is much better...

it is just a matter of reading the components of each product and what do you have in Mustela?

PEG-40 glyceryl cocoate, methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben etc etc..

J&J is even not mentioning the ingredients used which already says alot...

if you don't the meaning of this, just google paraben or PEG and you will how nice it is!!!

Does it mean that you will a negative effect right after the fist use? probably not..

but do people see the bad effects of smoking right after the first cigarette?

Opposed to that, Weleda was one the German/Swiss pioneers (together with Logona & Lavera) in natural cosmetics and is still the best-seller for natural cosmetics.. but the approach is completely different.. Weleda is normally sold to people already aware of the dangers of chemicals and concerned about our environment and our health..

I know I have already seen Weleda somewhere in HK and I know there are sold for sure but most probably in natural shops. I now use Logona (found in www.doubibou.com)

for more information, you can check the website of the North-American Environmental Working Group where you can search ratings on the safety of these products..

and you will see, for diaper cream, Weleda gets the green light and Mustela and J&J the yellow one for instance..

http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep/

finally, babies do indeed not need so much cream..

nappy rash cream can only be put in case of rash and not every single time..

bath soap shouldn't be systematic either...etc etc

Johnson and Johnson have a lovely smell, I always loved smelling the kids after their bath.

Sudocrem is brilliant for sore nappy rash.

I second crj, baby really doesn't need much. I love the Aromababy products though, available at b2b's, annerly midwives, and a few other places around town. All natural ingrediants and very very gentle on baby skin.

I used one of their shampoos, also the barrier balm (at diaper changes) and sweet almond massage oil, but grapeseed oil is also nice--both are the least allergenic massage oils--and that's all we used for months and months.

Well in the UK you have the equivalent Womens’ Environmental Network (www.wen.org.uk). they are most known for their work in promoting washable nappies and sanitary pads but started a similar report on safe cosmetics as well:

http://www.wen.org.uk/cosmetics/table_print.htm

You could otherwise probably find a British version of the ‘onevoice’ (brands which do not test on animals)..

For natural certified UK brands, there is the soil association, www.soilassociation.org.uk,

The most widely available one being probably ‘organic people’.. (www.greenpeople.co.uk)

However, you do find lots of world known brands in the skin deep report..and it is quite interesting indeed…

Mamouna,

I've found Weleda products at a shop in Windsor House in Causeway Bay! I think the shop is called Moon BeBe..? The selection is limited but at least they carry some of the products!

Mustela products has given my baby a severe rash on his forehead, under his chin and his outer arms. I finally figured out it was the mustela because I used the face wipes to wipe under his chin the other day and in a minute he had errupted in a rash. So I have discontinued the shampoo and am now using a pure oatmeal bath in a stocking. I wish I had figured it out before the darn thing spread to his cheeks and eyelids.

I really hope he grows out of this allergy. If it doesn't subside in a couple of days I'll have to see the ped.

That's a shame and I hope he gets over it quickly. You'll need to work out somehow what it is in the product that caused the allergic reaction because many similar products have similar (and sometimes exactly the same) ingredients. I'm grateful that our baby has no such reaction - although that might well come later with something we don't know about yet. Allergies can arise at any time - mine surfaced only 8 years ago with something I had eaten thousands of times in the past, and now cannot go near it (fresh mangoes).

I use Aubrey baby bath. I use Aubrey products for myself which is all organic and SLS free. It uses preservative that is extracted from grapefruit. This and the other Japanese baby soap (SLS free) which comes out from the bottle as foam (it is in a pink bottle and you can get it at City Super living section in Causway Bay) are the only things that I trust at the moment besides home made soap.

I didn't like Mustella baby wipe. I always tought Johson and Johnson is not good, but for me, Johnson and Johnson was better than Mustela. I say "me" because I tested baby wipes on myself to see how my skin reacts before using them on my baby. Mustela gave the delicate part of my skin stingy sensation whereas Johnson stuff was OK. (I only use the wipes for outings. At home I use water and cotton, or rinse her in a warm water.)

Sorry, I derailed from the main topic. It was about baby bath wasn't it? Here is the website of Aubrey products.

i use j&J because you can get it easily at supermarkets and my bub is fine with it (ie no reaction).

for nappy cream, we use drapolene twice daily after his baths. also because it's available in supermarkets and it's cheap! most of my friends use sudocrem.

don't have to use anything fancy and don't buy too much at the beginning until you know what your bub takes to best. my friend from HK bought me a tub of nappy cream from eco store - smells lovely and supposedly all natural but he got a reaction from that!! so there you go...have fun!

Do you now think that sometimes the more we know, the less we do? For example, how many of us when we were babies were brought up with J&J, or god forbid, normal soap? And funny enough, we've all made it to adulthood without too many adverse reactions! And yet, these same mothers are turning up their noses at using it for their children? Ok, I can fully sympathise with those mothers whose babies have highly sensitive skin and allergies, but to be honest, I would think J&J is probably fine for the good majority. They would sell it if it wasn't safe, particularly in this modern society where law-suits are so prevalent. Maybe it's us mothers who should relax a bit and maybe take note of what our own mothers did - can't have been all wrong!

Squiggles - True but also the sad fact is the environment is much more polluted than let's say 30 yrs ago. Air quality is much worse now and kids are getting allergies much more easily. Farmers are using more drugs and pesticides and hormones in growing vegetables and farming chickens and stuff. This is why more people prefer to spend more on organic products.

Chrispy06> If you haven't been to Little Giant yet, I suggest a visit - at least check out its website. It was started by mums who wanted products for their children which are healthy and suitable for kids with allergies.

It sells some Weleda products, plus California Baby and Rainbow Baby.
