I am expecting a baby and currently do not have a working visa, although I will get one soon. My boyyfriend is a permanant resident, so if i did not have HKID but he does does that mean my baby would automatically get it?

I've been into immigration this week, to find out the answer in my case.
The simple answer is that the baby 'follows the parent' therefore whatever your own visa restrictions are your baby will have the same.
This can be from either parent, but unfortunately Hong Kong usually does not recognise de facto relationships for immigration purposes, so as you are not married, you should check what will apply in your situation with your baby.
As Cara said, ask them directly, they have been very efficient every time I enquire in person or by email.

...and that means he/she will not have the right to work!

Incidentally, what sort of visa do you have? No working visa (you said that); no dependant's visa (unmarried & HK does not recognise de facto relationships for DV purposes)...

EmmaB,
cara is right. If you travel back and forth every 3 months and without ID. Then, you are tourist, not resident. Simply ask Immigration, no harm at all.

Until they notice the pattern and start asking awkward questions about your real intentions.
