I was considering giving birth at the Matilda but feel I would not be able to make it in time should I be stuck in traffic (30 minute contraction-to-delivery times run in the family). Given that, I was considering the Baptist hospital as it is quite close. But I'm not familiar with this hospital and could really do with some opinions from mothers who have given birth there, or give me some alternate advice. I looked at Queen Elizabeth but found it to be unclean.

Wow, 30 minutes? Sounds quick and easy!
I also live close to Baptist and considered it before I decided on Union Hospital (right outside Lion Rock Tunnel). One of the disadvantages is that Baptist is really crowded. I know a mother who gave birth there - she requested a three bed room and was stuck with an eight bed room. With visitors, it can be really noisy when you want to rest. Depending on when your due date is, Baptist is building an annex, and I believe that there will be more maternity beds, but you should ask them to see if the timing's right.
I wasn't very happy with the labor room and nursery nurses (can be a bit condescending and rude sometimes) at Union, but otherwise, the wards are clean and the ward nurses are very attentive.
You'll need to check with your doctor that he/she has an affiliation with Union or Baptist before you decide which one you want to deliver at.

Thanks a lot, my current doctor delivers at Baptist, that's why I'm asking, but am happy to change if I need to. I don't like the sound of being in a six bed room having booked a 3-bed room, that's a real turn off.

I just gave birth at The Baptist last week. I stayed in the rooms with 8 beds through choice. It can be a little noisy but nurses were great. The hardest part was that my husband couldn't hold the baby till i got discharged (4 days after her birth). I went to feed my daughter 4 times a day at allocated time slots. Visitors get 3 minutes, at 4 time slots a day to see the baby but only through a window. If you go for the private room then you can have your baby room-in but money was an issue for us and as far as the private route goes, i paid 50K for everything, alot more affordable than Matilda or Adventist. They used to allow fathers to hold the babies but after SARS, the policies changed. Now that the baby is home and healthy, can't really say i would change a thing about my birth experience, my doc was fantastic and my baby and i were well looked-after. Hope that info helps!

Thanks for the info (haven't been on for a while). I went to have a look at the hospital and found it to be quite crowded. Seemed most of the nursing staff didn't speak English, so that is also an issue. I also saw that there were no Western women in the ward on the day I went so that confirms this feeling about the English. I think the feeding hours and visiting hours are not going to be suitable since my family will be travelling from overseas and not being able to hold the baby is vastly inadequate for people who have made such an effort to be here. I might keep looking. Thanks.
