Home visit

Hi,

We have our home visit coming up and our social worker has already told us that we need to think about baby-proofing our house and our windows in particular. We don't actually need to have done anything now but need to have some ideas how we will solve the issues.

My question is the following: our windows do not have bars and getting some fitted is probably not an option (we are in a rented apartment). Have any of you found an alternative solutions for securing your windows?

Any other points I need to think about before our home visit?

Thanks for any advice, recommendations you could give me.

Hi FloS,

I would call your landlord. The bars leave no damage when removed and most people take them with them when they leave. The landlord has to be flexible if he wants to rent his apartment to couples or singles with children. I would imagine this is what any responsible family would do. We called ours and he said as long as we remove them when we leave, it isn't a problem.

The other option is installing the slide bars so that the window wont open past a certain point (too small to fall out of) but in my opinion the bars are the safest even if they are ugly!

When we did our first adoption they mentioned it in the home visit. e forgot and never followed through with it.

Now with our 2nd adoption and home visit, in a different flat, our new case worker mentioned it. Again, we did not fllow through with it.

Two of our neighbours do have the slide bars and they work great!

We just put locks on the windows that so that they cant open up past a few centimeters without and adult being able undo the wire. This is good if you have a push open window rather than a slide one.

Other things are just putting your medicines and cleaning products in either a high cupboard or locked cupboard etc.

You have probably had your first home visit by now so I hope that went well. We just got back in Hong Kong with our new daughter from Ethiopia and we are all setlling in nicely. She is georgeous and social and has bonded immediately. Such a happy little darling and her progress is amazing since leaving the orphanage environment in Ethiopia.

We will try and catch up with you again soon.

Wow, seems like "home studies" are diff in HK than here in the USA. When i inquired about HS here, I also thought they were looking for "baby proofing", etc. But hee, they just want to inspec the property to ensure that there would be no risks and dangers. Perhaps due to the long wait period betw application/homestudy to matching, they dont' look for baby proofing here yet.

how many sessions do you meet to complete the HS? We hvae to meet for 4 sessions here.
