I'm hoping not to get an episiotomy, but friends of mine that have had one say that sitting on a rubber 'ring' or donut postbirth relieves the pain. I would like to get one 'just in case.'
Are these available in Hong Kong, and where?

Any toy shop. Rubber ring like kiddies use at the beach whoudl do the job.
(And if you're delivering at Queen Mary then stop worrying - they'll give you an episiotomy whether you want it or not. )

well episiotomy shouldn't be the routine but tends to be just to ease some doc's work..
anyway, if you don't want it, talk to you obgyn/doc/nurse beforehand and mention that you wish to try 'natural' ways before like the use of hot compresses or perineal massage.
and believe me, even 'big babies'(4 and 5kg) can be born without episiotomy..
good luck!

I gave birth at the QM and didn't have an episiotomy and had no desire to sit on a rubber ring afterwards -- there was so much downward pressure in my nether regions that sitting on a ring would only add more pressure!
I was in all sorts of discomfort until a friend suggested I sleep with a pillow under my hips, and thus relieving the painful area instead of having all my weight bear down on it. Pain went away very quickly after I started doing that.

I recall that the 'donut' is actually bad for you b/c it can effect your circulation.
Ask your midwife for more details.
Don't worry, Episiotomy actually doesn't hurt much.

Thanks for all of your advice and suggestions. I'll be delivering at Matilda, and am REALLY hoping for no epi. That being said, I'm almost 28 weeks and our little boy is already big for his size. I think he'll be over 8lbs for sure, ouch!
