I am about 7 weeks pregnant of 2nd baby.
The 1st one was born last year at QMH.
This time I'm thinking of going to one of the above.
The Adventist is much closer to where we live, but I haven't heard much about it.
I have heard bad stories about the Matilda.
And that they were more prone to doing C-section at the Adventist, less used to natural birth.
I have to make a quick decision as to whether or not to book at the Adventist, and seeing that there is a non-refundable 20,000HKD.
Also, I'd like to be pampered! Just because I now know how hard it will be once back home and I'd like to be in my best possible state to be still there for both my babies.
Thanks for sharing your experince or advice, or maybe to point me towards another thread?

The best way to get a feel for which hospital would best suit your needs is to arrange a tour and have a look around. If you would like to look around at Matilda please give our Client Relations Manager, Inty, a call (2849 0355) and she will be happy to arrange a tour.

Hi Ahacha,
Sorry, I can't offer advice on the private hospitals. I do have a question for you though - was your experience at QMH okay? I will be going there in July and I am a bit nervous, have heard a lot of bad (and good!) things about QMH.
Thanks!

Hi RachRobin,
my experience was not the best, but to be honest I don't put it down to being at QMH.
I was unlucky that the delivery ended up in a vacuum extraction, after several hours of pushing stage to no effect. I had refused any epidural too. And my plan was to have a normal delivery, so they waited, until it became clear I was too exhausted.
So basically I made it a bit hard for myself deliberately.
I was sleeping in the normal ward, quite happily. Chinese TV in the background...
Having worked in hospitals before I didn't mind that and knew what to expect in terms of comfort, availability of staff, etc... Oh, the food was terrible! Especially the ...breakfast??!! Thank God there was also a boiled egg!
The only thing is that the delivery took place on Sunday afternoon, and I was out by Tuesday early afternoon, still in a right state from the problematic delivery.
And that's when it got hard and I think I then paid for having been too harsh on myself, which isn't good when you have to look after the baby.
In terms of comfort, probably my standards and expectations are much lower than most expat ladies, due to my personal experience of public hospitals, therefore I might not be a reference, I can't complain about the care I got, but perhaps others would have.
This time, I feel I want it just a little less rough, just to be able to manage the after better, and the luxury of the private hospitals add to that. I don't even care too much about the details, I just hope to be recovering or be able to stay a little longer if it turns out to be a difficult birth as well, because I'll have 2 babies to look after when I leave hospital.
Don't know if that helps...
Did you go for a tour?
And you can book a private room I think.
All the best.

I delivered at the Adventist & will deliver my second baby there soon....I don't think they are more prone to doing c-sections as it depends on you and your doctor. Many friends had natural deliveries at Adventist. I found it overall a very pleasant experience........cannot complain. I was at Matilda for an inpatient treatment of my kid and found it ok.....as it's so far off from Central the pediatrician only came by once a day.....other than that it was ok.
I think overall there isn't much difference.......just check where your doctor actually delivers as mine wouldn't go to Matilda. As for the pampering- the nurses at Adventist were great as I went through a hormonal rollercoaster after the delivery & they were always there & took the time to 'comfort' me and help!
Good luck!

I am due my first baby in June and am going to the Adventist. I also had the Matilda in mind but when I phoned them on two occasions the phone was answered by very stressed and rude people who don't have time to answer my questions now as they are too busy!! I phoned and went to view the Adventist, everyone was so nice, got a lovely leisurely tour and felt so much happier leaving there and so glad I've made this choice now. I've heard of lots of people delivering at Adventist who were very happy with facilities and nurses at the Adventist. Generally i think both hospitals are the same but Matilda seems very stressed and under pressure.
Another point to note is Adventist has more twin rooms so if you dont particularly want a private room, there's a good chance you're not forced to pay for one and take the upgrade as Matilda have less twin rooms and more private ones.
If you feel under pressure t to pay your deposit by a certain date to the Adventist, ring them up and they will extend your time for a couple of weeks if you wish to think about it - they are very accommodating. However, take a tour and I think you'll be happy with what you see at the Adventist.

There's no comparison! Matilda is pure luxury! My experience was excellent and I'd recommend it to anyone.

I deliverd at Matilda in Apr last year and my exp was amazing. The midwives are excellent and the post care is superb. When it was time to go home I almost wanted to take midwives home too since they were so good:) Dont think the exp at Matilda can be equated anywhere so would highly recommend it.

Thank you everybody for your replies, they've all been useful.
I think considering the proximity of the Adventist, I'll probably go for it.
I really don't need -or even want- luxury. That tends to make me more uncomfortable than anything else.
I'll just have to double check that my gynaecologist delivers there, which I think she does.
Thanks again!

Well... if you want to be pampered? I delivered at Matilda and have no experience with the Adventist - but I can definitely say it was a great experience, that helped me get back on my feet after a tough delivery. It was lovely to be able to have peace and quiet and get to know my baby before going home - and I'm sure that helped with the breastfeeding too! The midwives and nurses at Matilda were wonderful - very helpful and caring.
The big plus of having a room to yourself (if your insurance covers it of course) is that your first child can come and visit any time of the day - no limitations because of visting hours.
Take care and good luck with your pregnancy!

Hi,
yes I did write pampered...
It looks like they're really more or less equal, and the mums are the ones who are different!
I guess anyone can have a good or bad experience in any hospital.
Thank you for raising the point of my first child visit.
I'll try to see if they offer the same thing at the Adventist.
My choice of the Adventist is really more about its location.
Thanks everybody!

I'm due in early September and booked the Adventist too. I had a look around when I paid my deposit and thought it was great. The nurses were extremely friendly and the rooms look great.
I feel very good about my choice now. (originally wanted the Matilda, but doc doesn't deliver there)

I don't think they have visiting hours at the Adventist- it's a private hospital so you can come & go anytime you want to visit there.....incl. children. I had a private room & with our first child my husband stayed there overnight even.
