Hi all,
I know this is a common question and I am slowly going through older posts in the forum. But we just found out today my wife is pregnant. This is our 4th child so we are not inexperienced in the process but this is the first child we will have in HK (1 was born in Tokyo and 2 in Australia). Talking to some locals at work and they recommended the following hospitals:
Kwong Wah
Kowloon Baptist
St Theresa
Just curious if anyone has had any maternity experience with these hospitals? Also can anyone recommend a good OBYGN in Kowloon, English speaking and foreign trained (AU, UK or USA for example). In fact can anyone recommend and Australian OBYGN that services Kowloon side?
Finally any idea at what cost I am looking at to have a baby here? In Australia its close to 10k AUD when all is said and done having a normal birth privately. With health cover/Medicare covering about 60~70% of that. Wondering how comparable HK is. If its really a lot more expensive I would consider actually having the baby in Australia.
We had a nightmare delivery in Tokyo while Australia was a high-tech, high-skilled paradise. Just wondering where HK sits on this spectrum.
Thanks in advance.

I gave birth at St Teresa. It was fine but the main downsides are that the baby cannot be with you (all the babies are in the nursery), and you have to go to the breastfeeding room to breast feed the baby at fixed times. The other thing is that the father cannot hold the baby but only get a viewing at a fixed times through a window. I shared a room with two other women but it was quiet. I believe they bring the baby to you if you have a room to yourself so that will eliminate the problem of breastfeeding at fixed times and father holding the baby. It is worth checking if you have insurance. The nurses were helpful with breastfeeding. I remember that the cost was reasonable -- I think the room charge was around HK$25,000 including epidural. You have to pay your doctor separately for the delivery and monthly visits, tests, scans. My doctor was Dr Danny Kong but his office is in Central not Kowloon.
Kwong Wah is a public hospital. If you are a HK resident it is very cheap - a few hundred dollars. Baby stays with you so you can breastfeed anytime but there are fixed times for visitors.

Thanks babybemine. Were you happy with Danny Kong?

Solomani, sorry for not getting back to you earlier. I only just saw your post. Did you find a doctor?
Dr Danny Kong is fine. Thorough enough, quite westernised and seems to have mainly English speaking clients. He is not a big name doctor but is fine for a case with no major complications. His office is small and is in a building in the main alley in Central. He never pushed a c-section on me even though I was advanced maternal age. He doesn't do amnios so if you need one, you would have to do it with someone else which is what I did. Hope this helps.
