My wife who is having an antenatal checkup at PMH now just called me up to tell me she saw posters saying "Non-locals" need to pay 39 k in effect from Feb 2007 to have their babies delivered.
Just to clarify, both of us have HKIDs (she's my dependent and I have a working visa), and the reason we went public is because we were told by some friends who also delivered in public hospitals that the costs are low.
Question is, what does that 39 k pertain to? Is it the cost of all the checkups combined or just the delivery?
Can anyone who has recently given birth at a public hospital give any advice?
Thanks.

Non-locals refers to people who are not resident in HK and not holding HKID cards. This is to prevent an influx of mainland women giving birth in public hospitals, which previously pushed local mothers out.
As you are both ID card holders on official visas, therefore resident, this does not apply to you and you are able to enjoy the benefit of the public hospital system.
To clarify that price of $39,000 for non locals is delivery only. For you, if all fine and no problems with birth the delivery cost and stay post delivery should be in the region of $350-$400.

Almost pulled all my hair out before I saw your replies...better start putting them back in.
Thanks a bunch and God bless!

we paid $200hkd with HKID at Queen Mary. Non locals pay full price. HKID does not pay even a fraction of that amount.
