My husband and I plan to have a family very soon.
I would like to make sure I consider every point before going into this project.
Did you have pre-pregnancy medical tests? And how much money it cost per month for full pregnancy follow-up?
I looked at private maternity fees!! It’s a lot of money!
I have a private local insurance which is ok but not that good and I've just realized that I'll have to pay 20% of total medical spending and make sure I don’t spend over a certain limit.
Especially if something goes wrong at the delivery (baby or mum) and need extra care… I can't imagine being ruined for medical reasons..
This system is completely different from my home country (where everything is 100% covered).
From what I heard, gynecologists’ fees are pretty expensive here and don't hesitate to charge you more...
I feel it very complicated to give birth here in “very good" conditions if you don’t have a great insurance package…
Am I the only one worried about this? Or I paint a very black picture of the situation? Some similar experience to share?
Thks

my wife has given birth to 2 children here, and 1 more due very soon.
all 3 were born using the public health care system. the total costs were less than 1000hkd per child. the decision to use public over private was completely hers, as she said "with any major issues the private hospitals ship you off to public anyway, so why not just start there?"
there are also plenty of cases where you sign on for private care and they can't take you last minute so you end up in public anyway.
the level of care and professionalism (queen mary) were very decent.
she supplemented the public healthcare checkups with private clinic visits each month mostly just to get copies of the scans and a second opinion, this was about 1500hkd per visit and NOT paid for by my insurance plan.
you need to be a proper hong kong resident and HKID holder to take advantage of public care.
don't worry, you will be well taken care of here without massive expense.
