Hi everyone,
I went tot he doc who told me i had PCOS and i have been taking Glucophage. I have been told that i ovulate but my uterus lining is too thin. My doc told me to try anyway naturally this month but then move onto Clomid next month. I have read info on PCOS but i seem to be a mild form as i ovulate and have a 30 day period (though i spot before my actual AF). Has anyone has a similar experience? Did Clomid help? I amn given only a 4% chance of conceiving naturally....is there anything i can do to help myself? Anyadvice would be much appreciated as i am so confused with all this info!

Hi, Babeez. I think I have a very similar profile to yours. Doctors have been divided on whether I have PCOS as I have a borderline case too. I also have regular periods (around 28-30 days). My lining is on the thin side. I am taking metformin (generic version of glucophage). First, have you gotten a second opinion on whether you actually do have PCOS? Based on what factors were you diagnosed? I have taken metformin for a year but unfortunately have not gotten pregnant, but it appears many women with PCOS respond well to the drug, so give it a try. If you are overweight, it helps to exercise and eat more nutritiously (low glycemic diet - avoid carbs), as that will help restore your hormonal balance. I've tried Clomid without success, but again, many women with PCOS get pregnant using a combination of metformin and fertility drugs. I haven't tried this myself, but some women use natural progesterone cream for thin lining. You can do a search on this site. Don't lose hope!

Hi Babeez
I was misdiagnosed as having PCOS and was given Metformin. Personally I would get a second opinion. I got a second opinion with a fertility specialist, I was told I did not have PCOS and to stop the medication. I have also taken Clomid without success, although it does work for some. The Clomid actually made my lining too thin. If you are spotting before your period, has your doc tested your progestrone level during your cycle? Sometimes spotting is due to low progestrone. I had this problem.
Why has the doc only given you a 4% chance of conceiving naturally? Just because of the PCOS?
Which doc are u seeing if u don't mind me asking?

Thank you JH1 and Buz for your kind responses. I will try to keep optimistic. After my doctor's visit, i did some research on the internet about Clomid and most info told me that it would thin my lining but my lining is already too thin. Surely that is not a good option for me then? So i am taking the Glucophage now and supposedly starting Clomid next month, i ovulate and have a regular period so i think maybe my progesterone level might be too low as Buz mentioned. I will start some research on the cream, i have no idea what that is but will find out. I have only been trying a few months so all this is still new to me. The doc says my hormone levels look fine and said i had PCOS by looking at my ultrasound (i have some small cysts). I just feel so inundated with confusing info sometimes. Hubby and i are still optimistic though as we read through all the messages regarding PCOS on this site and ladies with seemingly more severe cases were successful in the end so i will keep my fingers crossed and try anyway!
Buz, i pm-ed you the doctor's name. I didn't want to mention it here as i had posted a few negative comments about her in a past thread. :)

Hi, Babeez,
Who was your doctor by the way? I wonder if we have the same one. Do you have any other symptoms than cysts? If so, how many cysts? Cysts alone don't necessarily mean that you have PCOS, as you probably know from doing research. I got a second opinion and was told that I didn't have PCOS. I took an OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test) today as I wanted to see what the levels were. My LH and FSH ratios were normal. What kind of blood tests did your doctor run? Another doctor that I consulted said that he would not use Clomid on me due to its effect on the lining; he said he would use another FSH like Gonal-F. Other than the thin lining, another symptom of low progesterone is a short luteal phase (less than 12 days). If you have low progesterone levels, your doctor can also prescribe progesterone suppositories/gel. If cysts were your only symptoms for PCOS, I would recommend getting a second opinion.

Hi Buz, PM-ed you back!
JH1, I have decided to change docs to get a second opinion as i am still miffed as to how Clomid could help when my lining is already too thin. I sound very much like you in fact so will be interested to hear what another doc might have to say. Will be booking my appointment tomorrow. I am throwing baby dust all over the two of us as we speak!!!

Do you mind telling me who your doctor was? You can PM me if you feel uncomfortable revealing the name on the site. Good luck with the second opinion. It surprises me how different doctors are in their diagnosis and treatment plans. If your hormone levels are normal, you might consider getting an OGTT - you load up on a glucose drink, and they test your blood and urine every hour. It appears that most women with PCOS are insulin resistant. Some women apparently don't show irregularities until the 4th or 5th hour, so I took an extended test (the standard one measured levels up to 2 hours after the glucose load).

Babeez, I just PM'd you.
Buz, did you also have the same doctor as Babeez and me? I'd be interested in hearing about your experience. Of the 4 doctors I consulted, only one doctor thought I had PCOS.

Buz - sent you a PM. As an afterthought, I went to see someone at Qeen Mary after my experience with ovarian hyperstimulation. I asked them what they would have done under the same circumstances of ovarian hyperstimulation. They said they would have just retrieved all the eggs, fertilized and frozen them, let my condition stabilize and just put some embryos back the following cycle! So I ended up just wasting over 30 eggs on that cycle!

Hello again everyone!
I was just wondering...before taking Glucophage, my ovulation was on day 14 of a 28 day cycle and this month it is day 20...does Glucophage make you ovulate later? Anyone on this med have any similar experiences? Just curious, thanks!

I think it might be more common for women who ovulate later to ovulate earlier on glucophage. Women with PCOS who don't ovulate often find that it helps them ovulate. Your body might be adjusting to it; it will have an impact on your endocrine system. You should mention it to your doctor. By the way how did your appointment go with Dr. Ho?

Hi JH1,
Thanks for asking! My appointment is next Thursday as i was told that was a better time in terms of where i will be in my cycle. Will let you know though. I was hoping that as i am ovulating later, my uterine lining would be thicker. Fingers crossed! :)

Babeez,
If the delayed ovulation happens again, I think you should reconsider with another doctor whether glucophage is right for you. To go from Day 14 ovulation to Day 20 seems doesn't seem to be an improvement - if anything your body might have struggled more to ovulate this cycle. It could just be a temporary reaction to the drug as your body is still adjusting to it. I could be wrong, but I don't think delayed ovulation necessarily means thicker lining. On the other hand, if the drug is working for you, the improved hormonal balance might eventually result in higher progesterone levels, and therefore thicker lining. I hope it will be the latter! When I went to Dr. Ho for a consultation last year, he took a lot of time answering my questions. It might have helped that I was the last appointment of the day, and therefore he didn't need to tend to anyone else afterwards. Just a tip! I hope it goes well! Let me know how it goes. I actually recently stopped my metformin after a year as I lost confidence in the diagnosis.

Thanks for the feedback JH1, I will go with the questions written down this time as i always forget everything when i actually see the doc. I am hoping it is the latter too but my OPK was positive for 2 days which was weird for me too so it sounds like the former. Still, i BD'd all the way through so it's in God's hands now. In a way, i feel better about it this month as i have been more relaxed being told there was little chance. At least i am not spending all day googling and reading pregnancy books. If it happens then ofcourse i will be over the moon, if not, i'll see what Dr. Ho can do. I work till late so i took a morning appointment but will know for next time! Thanks again!
