A Ghost Town in Hong Kong

Man Wa, a 250-year old village, was once home to a fishing and farming community of over two thousand people. But it was abandoned 3 decades ago and all that remains are the deteriorating ruins of homes and a schoolhouse.

As recently as the 1980s, Man Wa was, much like Lamma Island is today, famed for its seafood restaurants with expats and locals visiting on weekends to enjoy a meal.

But at the turn of the century, Sun Hung Kai Properties and the government negotiated a buy-out with the villagers and in 2006 the luxury Park Island residential development was built.

Villagers whose families had resided in Man Wa for over 99 years were provided with homes in nearby New Man Wa Village in the vicinity of Park Island.
