China’s top official on Hong Kong affairs has lashed out at President Donald Trump, saying his tariff war is less about money and more about attacking the well-being of Chinese people.
“The US isn’t after our tariffs — it is after our very survival,” Xia Baolong, who heads the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office and is based in Beijing, said on Tuesday. “Anyone who tries to bring us back to poverty and weakness is our enemy.”
Speaking remotely at a national security event in Hong Kong, Xia portrayed Washington as waging a broader campaign against China’s progress, saying the country has overcome great adversity before and would not allow foreign pressure to push it backward. He singled out the steep 145% cumulative tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Hong Kong, describing the action as “arrogant and shameless.”
