- Do not entertain potential buyers using non-Hong Kong phone numbers. To be safe, immediately block them.
- Do not pay a deposit.

- Always test appliances and electronics before paying for them
- If you see suspicious behaviour, please copy the ad and email it to info@asiaxpat.com
Over the years our team has strived to keep scammers from accessing our website, but there are still some who slip past our security measures.
So we've set up this platform to inform users of how these scams are carried out.
Some scammers may pretend to be interested in purchasing your item, but they will mention that they are currently working overseas or stuck at sea like an oceanographer, and has a courier company that can pick up the item swiftly so you won't have to worry about sending the item to them.
If this is what you've encountered, then please send our team an email to report this scam.
- Bank Payments/ Wire transfers
Some scammers will pretend to send you money as proof of purchasing your item and you will receive a seemingly believable email from a bank/wire transfer company with your details. In order for the so-called payment to come through, they will ask you to send some money to cover the additional wire transfer fee.
If this is what you've encountered, then please send our team an email to report this scam.
Some scammers will contact you directly via Whastapp if you have provided your number on your ad and pretend to be interested in purchasing your item. But they are otherwise Overseas and will arrange payment by Bank/Wire Transfer as mentioned in the first 2 points above.
If this is what you've encountered, then please send our team an email to report this scam.
Some scammers would post defective appliances/gadgets on the website. When you test these items, the products appear to be in good working condition. After a few days the item will stop working.
If this is what you've encountered, then please send our team an email to report this scam.
Some users will post items on our site and provide you with incorrect contact information and/or address on purpose.
If this is what you've encountered, then please send our team an email to report this scam.
If your experience was different from the abovementioned examples, please feel free to list them here to keep all our users informed!
Sincerely,
The AsiaXPAT Team

I received the following replies to one of my ad by what's app and email. Please beware:
Is your ( Tumble dryer ) on Asiaxpart still available ? Please email me at Laurapow98@gmail.com for quick response
My Name is Mrs. Laura Powell and Thanks for your response. I am so sorry for not responding back to your message on time. It was due to being busy with work, It's good to know that the ( Tumble Dryer) are still available for sale and still in good condition as it was described on the advert.
I want you to know I have a courier company that will come for the pickup of the item, so you don't have to bother yourself shipping the item, I will handle the shipping expenses. I am an oceanographer from Kowloon Hong Kong and i am presently working on sea due to my status of work and now i am currently located in South Africa and the item is being courier here and i will let you know all the courier details as soon as the payment is made to your account with confirmation.
I won't be able to view the goods but I am very happy with the pictures on the advert I saw on asiaxpat and I am very happy and glad with the pictures and I will be happy to purchase it from you without any return or any complaint.
I would like to let you know that I will be making the payment to you through HSBC or /Hang Seng Bank if you have one because I only have access to my bank account and I know it is a secured method of payment for both of us to use.
I don't have a FPS set up with HSBC. I can only make payment to an HSBC or Hang Seng account number. If that is okay by you, you can get back to me with your final asking price and your HSBC details and we can go from here. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yes , I received the exact same email today . I gave fake bank details just to see what the scam actually was , the reply :
Thank you for your banking details. I was about to make the payment into your bank account right now, but am having a little problem with the picking up of the goods. I am trying to secure a booking with my courier company now but they asked me to pay first before they can secure the booking for the goods, and they are only accepting Western Union money transfer for payments because of the bad experience they had in the past with other forms of payments. So I tried to send the money to them online but it's not going through and I am on sea, There is no way I can get off the sea to find a Local western union agent to make the transfer to my courier company. So I would like to ask if it would be okay for me to include my courier company fees together with your payments through bank transfer,So you will help me transfer the pick up fee to them via any local western union store around you today because they need to receive the payment today or tomorrow . I don't mean to bother you, I'm sure you understand ? I just wanted to seek your consent before going ahead with the payments,I will be very happy if my offer is given a favorable consideration.

Got a WhatsApp message from a South African number, asking availability of a product I posted, but insisted to use email for "prompt response". And when I replied, her email looked like this:
"Hi ,

I am happy to hear that the( chest of 7 drawers and wardrobe) is still for sale,, i am an oceanographer and presently working on the sea due to my status of work, i won't be able to see the item but i will be okay with the pictures and am would be happy to purchase it from you and my mode of payment is PayPal. I would like to ask you some questions regarding the item ?
1.Are you the real owner?
2.What is the present condition?
3. If pictures are available you can email me some pictures
Note: I will be making payment through PayPal because my bank account is linked to my PayPal account and PayPal is a secured method of payment for both the buyer and seller.kindly email me a PayPal money request invoice direct to my verified PayPal email which is the same as my email address marionfoote@yahoo.com to proceed with the payment..i believe you can set up a PayPal account easily at www.paypal.com if you don't have one. I suspected it was scam but wasn't for sure until she asked me to help her transfer money to the "courier".
"Thank you for your PayPal invoice . I was about to make the payment into your PayPal account right now, but am having a little problem with the picking up of the goods. Ha! I got exactly the same message about the oceanographer! The courier picking it up & everything. They tried me twice (over a long period - I guess they couldn't keep track). But the second time the phone no (WhatsApp) was new (though still South Africa), but the profile picture was the same.
This time the message was short and they said to reply on email to Lisa Carver.
Complete scam. Be careful.

Hi ,
I have made the payment of $3,800.00 HKD into your PayPal account and PayPal emailed me confirming this. Kindly check your PayPal email address (xxx@hotmail.com ) inbox, spam email for the PayPal confirmation email. PayPal said that they would be holding the money I sent because of the excess payments that I made , which was the money for pick-up, i will need you to proceed and send the excess which is $2,300.00 HKD to my courier company to enable them to make a booking or the pick up.
So please do send the $2,300.00 HKD through any local HSBC bank around you or if you have online banking. After you have sent the money please get back to me asap with the copy of the transfer receipt so that i can forward it back to PayPal for your money to be put through or you can email it to PayPal directly, that is alright as well. I believe you can transfer it online if you create an online Banking account.
Here is my courier company info that you will need to send the courier fee to:
HSBC Bank
Name : GUILLIN I V
Account No : 814-649836-833
My courier company will contact you to book a pick up time after they have received payments but they will have to book a time that is convenient for you. Thank you and I will be looking forward to hearing from you soon after the payment is made to the courier company.
Note: The funds are on hold due to the pick up agent fee which is $2,300.00 HKD and you are to send the $2,300.00 HKD out of your pocket first and email PayPal with the payment details so that they can credit your account asap. The funds have already been deducted from my account as soon as the payment was made to you and as soon as you complete the pick up agent fee and email pay pal with the payment slip, your account will be credited asap. Please kindly get it done asap so that we can proceed, I hope to read from you soon.
Regards

Personally, I would like it VERY MUCH if us sellers could list the bastard "buyers" (presumably) in HK who say that they want an item, and then never turn up - or even have the decency to inform the seller that they have "lost interest" and won't take it. No contact - no nothing - Zilch !!
Please add a resource that can display these wowsers - it may not shame them, but it can "Warn off" others from wasting any time on responding to them !!!!!

Please be careful not to deal with buyers who want you to ship the items to USA, etc. It is most likely a SCAM.

Approached with WhatsApp and requested switching to email for further contact. Agreed to trade quickly and said won't be able to trade in person as a constant travelling "oceanographer" and he/she only has a PayPal account. A mover will be sent to pick up the item once payment is made. Requested the item value to be requested through PayPal.
Though all the above were done, the payment was not settled immediately (say a few days, compared to all the above conversations happened within half an hour. ) I follow up with the payment and this 'person' said he/she has difficulties in settling mover fee and the moving company accepted local transfer to a HSBC account, if agreed an additional amount will be add onto the item value for the amount to be transfer to the 'moving company'.
It all sounds strange and luckily I found these postings about the scams before this trade/ conversation keeps going. Thank you the ASIAXPAT team and all outspoken individuals!

The SF wallet scam again
Please support our advertisers:
A Lalamove Wallet scam has just been reported.
The scammer will send you a link that will take you to a website that looks a lot like Lalamove. Eventually you will be asked to log in to your bank account.
This is how they will steal your information and gain access to your bank account.
This is very similar to the SF Express Wallet scam that has also been recently reported.
Lalamove and SF Express do not have this service. It is a scam.
Please be aware and block them.
