What is the downside to buying in Mid Levels?

Hi

I recently moved here from Sing, im looking to buy an apartment around the Mid Levels. I will be here for 3 years plus and think it makes sence to pay less rent and keep the equity.

What are the potential problems as an expat?

At the risk of stating the obvious, the HK property market can swing 50% in three years (or less). So it's a risk: that "equity" you mention can become negative frighteningly fast. Ask anyone who bought in spring 1997!

Of course, you can rent it out in a downturn - but being a landlord in a different timezone can be a pain... calls on your mobile at 3am to tell you the kitchen tap is dripping, etc. And few HK property agents want to waste their time sorting out maintenance issues etc on your behalf.

Also, will your family size increase? I came to HK as a bachelor and bought a small apartment never thinking I would have kids, but...!
