Relocating to HK in a couple of months.
Was wondering if 15K is enough for a decent place in midlevels? Friend recommended Shiu King Court - does anyone know what this place is like? i.e. size, location, furnishings, etc?

If that's your budget, you will have very limited choice if you want to be in Midlevels, so in that respect the advice is sound. It's a 20 year old high rise building in midlevels and very close to numerous bars/nightlife. Although the developer (Henderson) is not bad, beware that any 20 year old building in HK looks and feels like a 40 year old building in the West. Your budget will get you a 631 square foot apartment in there (just - low floor; noise, pollution). The sad truth is that 15k isn't going to get you anything smart in midlevels.

It is enough and you can even find cheaper alternatives. It really depends on your level of expectations and what is comfortable for you.
If you want something thoroughly clean with new furnishings in a relatively new building, you should expect to pay 20K+. I don't know Shiu King Court, but allow the agents to give you a tour because there's more too see than you imagine. 15K should be able to get you an apartment of 400-500 sq, and the location will probably be not too far from the escalator. Like Burgundy said, the apartment is most likely going to be in an old Chinese building or a modest building that's 15-20 years old. The humidity here does a lot of damage to buildings. Even when they say the apartment's renovated, a lot leaves to be desired because it's just a quick make-over with subpar materials.
Often times the apartments aren't furnished which means tedious trips to Ikea (I don't think you're going to furnish Arne Jacobsen to a rental!). And if they're furnished, you wish they weren't because the stuff landlords are willing to part from are often crap.
There are quite a few companies that are remodeling old apartments into very stylish and sufficiently furnished flats, but you're still looking at the 18K-20K+ range.

Thanks for your replies. This definitely helps, I guess I should go with low expectations. Thanks again.

15K you can find a decent apartment in Mid-levels, I'm on Mosque street and the rent in my building starts from $8000 up. The apartments are small and many of them studio so it really depends on what you're looking for.
Also take a look at Princes Terrace and Seymour Rd, they're still in Mid-levels but have older buildings.
Happy hunting!!

bellevue is a quiet building just off caine road. i think they are about 10 yrs old, but very well maintained. they are definitely within your budget of 15. in fact, they are decent... so not sure why some think 15K will only get you an old chinese building with no lift.

Just walk along Caine Road and look at the real estate windows to get a quick idea. There are literally hundreds of agents here all wanting your business to choose and area then find and agent close by becasue each agent tends to only manage listings in a very small area.
