I have no idea what it's like renting in HK and I am not sure what i will get paid when i come here so I was wondering what kind of appartment (1brm) could you get for under $5k in HK or Kowloon? I mean, are we talking rundown shanty?

look around PRince Edward. There are plenty of nice flat at that price for rent. Also jordan and Yau ma tei. Convenient!
