Rent an apartment as a visitor? (Have a HKID, but...)

I have a HKID from when I worked in Hong Kong before but I am a Visitor when I am in Hong Kong. I am living and working in China, but I would like to rent a place in Hong Kong for a 1 year contract. I am willing to give 2 + 1 months rent deposit. Probably some cheap place around Mong Kok for convenience. I don't want a serviced apartment or anything expensive as I will only be there on weekends! Is this possible?

Thanks for the information mcgrada1. And now that I think of it, I have used my ID card to get a phone contract without being a resident at that time.

The reason I asked is that someone told me that a person needs a valid visa (non visitor) to take residence in Hong Kong. That might be true, but I guess it won't matter when renting a tiny flat as long as I pay the deposit and keep up with rent. The landlord/agency probably won't check my ID number with immigration or any other government agency (of course unless there is a legal problem), and won't ask to see my visa, right???

Actually no, because I enjoy privacy and tend to mess other people's things up. Thanks though.

We recently signed a new lease agreement w/ a new landlord, they didn't ask for our passport or visa, only a copy of our HKID... oh, and an employment letter.
