Cool places to live on Kowloon side

Hello there!

My sister and I are moving from Nova Scotia, Canada to Hong Kong in August. We are being put up in a hotel for two weeks, and during that time must find an apartment to call our own. I am working in Sha Tin and my sister also somewhere on the Kowloon side.

We were curious as to where we should live?? We found a website for some furnished apartments in Castle Peak, and on the map that looks far, but we also heard you can get anywhere in Kong in an hour...so perhaps it's not as far and our map has led us to believe.

We definately need some help/advice...we are stressing over the whole apartment shopping bit and would love to calm our nerves with a little friendly help.

Are there any specific areas to live where there is an abundence of other english teachers?? (we are definately going to need some friends)

Thank you in advance for whatever help/advice you may have to offer!

Hello - I am relocating to HK in August as well from New York, US. What school did you and your sister get on with? I have a TESOL certification but no work experience in the teaching field and heard that teaching english is the easist way for a westerner to aquitre sponsorship. Is your new employer looking for more teachers? We also will be looking for residence and are open to suggestions from anyone living in HK currently.

We are working for the Delia School of Canada - which includes a number of different schools located throughout Hong Kong. My sister and I are working at different schools at different levels. For the most part, you need to have a BEd (to teach at any level, any subject) or at least a BA (to teach english only at the Kindergarten level).

Another question for people...how difficult is it going to be to find a decent two bedroom...and generally, how much do they run? I am scared :(

Why would you want to live with English Teachers? Talk shop all night. Can't think of anything worse. Once a forthnight is enough for me. Do you really want to come to Asia to be with Westeners? Sai Kung is a goer though if that's what you want. My advice would be stay in your hotel for a couple of months or a serviced apartment. Getting a flat is expensive and a mistake will be costly. ie 2 year rental agreement etc. If you want a wild nightlife then HK Island is more convienient but if you want quiet country life then Sai Kung or other areas would be good. A balance might be Kowloon Tong. I like Northpoint but after two years am looking at a village house. Need to study and chill out. Rents are shooting up but you can get a 2 bedroom apartment from about $7000.(450 sq') People spend way more though for bigger apartments eg $20-30000 per month. Village houses can be as little as $7000 I believe. You also have the islands but that could be a drag travel wise though very nice. Lots of choices but take your time! There is no way you have to decide in 2 weeks - that would be madness.

Madness is right! ...and my sister and I don't necessarily want to live with other teachers, we would just like the possibility of meeting others who speak english....compredez?? Anyways, we will check out Sai Kung...and are serviced apartments the same as furnished apartments?
