Mike... you're not the only one wondering... in fact, I should say many have already stopped wondering and concluded the way you are only wondering now. In addition to all that you have said... I would say the asthetic bits perplexes me... and also the poor air quality. So all in, some (not all) of this ugly buildings and the poor air give me a nauseating feeling walking around midlevels or travelling on the travelator.
So, opt out... unless you need the Soho/ LKF lifestyle daily. Else be a guest (rather than a resident) and you'll probably appreciate the place a lot more.

Mike, I live near the escalator and let me tell you about some of the benefits of living in the area. I walk to/from Exchange Square for work everyday, approx. 15 min. each way. Nice exercise, saves time and all those hustles of going to a gym. Never have to worry about finding a taxi or waiting for a bus, whether it's a sunny or rainy day. I often walk to Stanley via Bowen Rd./Blacklinks/Violet Hills at weekend. It takes me less than 10 min. to walk to Bowen Rd. and then it's a nice walk all the way to Stanley. I sometimes play tennis with friends at the LRC on Old Peak Rd. and it takes me 5 min. to get there. I walk to the Peak whenever I feel like to, and there are several routes to get there. I meet up with friends for coffee, drinks, and plenty choices in the area. I shop at the Pacific Place and IFC 2 for work and casual wear, which have everything I need. Wellcome, Parknshop, City Super and the wet market have all the food I need, western and Asian. Most importantly, most my friends also live in the area so it's very easy to organise sports and get together. I think mid-levels is great. Not sure about Happy Valley. I hate wasting time on travelling and travelling on buses.

Another advantage of living in the Mid -levels I found was the expat crowd. As a result most of the shops have english speaking staff. Another place which is becoming a godd place to live is Pok fu Lam.

I am in the what's so great about the midlevels camp. Granted it is convenient but most people I know who do live there always need to get away at weekends and go for walks to escape their flats.Other people I know don't even know whether the sky is blue because they can't see it from their flat. It seems that some colleagues who walk to work regularly from their midlevel flat have passed through a rabbit warren because they have no idea of the state of the weather (except when it is raining of course!)Then there is the constcant road works in the area, drilling from building renovations, drilling from new buildings being built not to mention the traffic noise! Each to their own and absolutely not for me. i think the midlevels is best suited to people who don't intend to spend much time at home and can sleep through anything. As for Happy Valley...I too have never understood how the view of a racecourse is anything to write home about!!Now Discovery Bay is using a Disney land view as a selling/renting point ...apart from the firework display everynight can anyone explain that one to me?Mickey Mouse?Shmickey shmouse!
