Ok to live in Wan Chai?

Hi, I just moved to HK recently and have been staying at temporary serviced apts. I am considering moving to more permanent digs in Wan Chai. The apt I'm eyeing is in the area closer to Times Square and Causeway Bay MTR, than to Wan Chai MTR. I read that there is a part of Wan Chai which is the red-light district and has less savoury characters. Can someone please enlighten me on this? Where in Wan Chai is that district? many thanks.

As you exit from the Wanchai MTR station along Lockhart road, on your left, there starts the distict..

it goes down Lockhart road and the parallel street, Jaffe.

Anything east of Canal Rd is fine. To the west of Canal Rd can be seedy, particularly on the streets a/b mentions - though high retail rents are gradually cleaning up the area. Just walk around your prospective digs at night with a male friend - the seedy areas are pretty clearly advertised with neons saying "Sauna" or "Massage" or whatever.

Thanks for the fantastic advice, annebin and 2006! The apt I'm interested in is a block west of Canal Rd, not exactly in the zone. But it's still too close for comfort. Thanks again.
