Hi,
I was just wondering if there are any Tung Chung residents who could tell me if it's noisy living there with the airport being so close?
Cheers

It depends.
If you stay in Seaview Crescent, Coastal Skyline and Caribbean Coast and have a sea facing flat, the planes are really noisy, but you do get used to it. Face the, mountain and you will not hear the airplanes at all
Personally I like living here, don't believe all the dreadful reporting in the SCMP about pollution in Tung Chung, it is a territory wide problem niot just here

I live in Caribbean Coast and have partial sea view. We thought it was going to be noiser but it's not. Granted you do get use to it. Our windows are closed during the summer since the AC is on and closed on the cold winter days since the heater is on. Sometimes when we're watching tv we close them so we can hear better but definitely not a big deal. We love it here!

according to the newspaper, most people get respiratory diseases after having lived in Tung Chung for a while. I used to consider buying a property there & have changed my mind because of air pollution.

Will view more flats in TC tomorrow, and considering move sometime May.
Any additional feedback from residents in TC Crescent, Sv Crescent and Coastal Skyline?
We're crossing off Caribbean Coast in our shortlist as we find it inconvenient to be taking the shuttle to the MTR station and back (husband works in TST). Any feedback? I like it there because dogs are allowed..

Technically dogs aren't allowed in Tung Chung Crescent (or cats for that matter) - we had to smuggle our cats in and out of the apartment building and I was even 'refused entry' a couple of times into my own building by overzealous doormen. I also found mold to be a huge problem in Tung Chung Crescent - we had to throw out a lot of stuff because of it and were running dehumidifiers 24/7. The air pollution in Tung Chung is also really high. Yes, you are close to hiking trails in Tung Chung, but we did not feel this was enough to counter all of the negatives of living there. Just my opinion, having lived in Tung Chung for a year, and moved.

Deliran,
Which side was your apartment facing? Wasn't there enough sunlight filtering through some of your windows?

We were facing the mountain (thus, no noise from the airport) and got morning sun. I don't know why mold was such a problem - but it really was. We're in the Western Midlevels now (around the Belchers) - don't always get direct sun because we've got trees right in front of the windows, but no problems with mold at all. We're close to the country parks around the Peak and can walk our dogs easily - I like it much better than Tung Chung.

Saw some flats at Seaview Crescent and Coastal Skyline today, and was deliberately checking for tell-tale signs of mold or dampness (especially today when it's chilly for an April summer).
So far, among the ones we liked, there were no signs of mold. Probably because most (are facing the sea) have sunlight filtering through the rooms during the day (facing northeast, we were told).

Hi Annebin,
I notice Coastal Skyline now has a shuttle bus next to the Caribbean Coast shuttle bus stop and lots of residents are taking it. I wouldn't exclude CC because of it. The ride is only 4-5 mins and in Phase 2 they have just opened a Park N Shop, 7-11, Watsons, video rental, dry cleaning & laundry, a few restaurants and salons. All the things you would go to Citygate for. Also, CC club has a shuttle bus that goes direct to TST in the mornings and back in the evenings though membership is required.

We are subscribed to Now broadband tv and Netvigator. I would like to assume all flats in TC have signal for these if we move here?

On the air pollution being specifically bad in TC, I think it became something of an urban myth after the 2004 incident where it garnered an API of 201 (a record in HK I think) for one really bad day. The place suffers from a bad perception now.
I monitor the gov EPD site daily and you can review the past figures for yourself. TC is up there with the higher pollution scores during the winter time (being in the mouth of the Pearl River delta it is directly impacted by the pollution circulation effect of the region), but in summer it has some of the lowest in HK when there is a fresh breeze from the sea.
Having attended a meeting (run by AsiaXPAT and Civic Exchange), the medical expert there said that was not much to choose between different regions in HK to avoid pollution. Granted tho that living down by the roadside in the more built up areas like Central, CWB, Mongkok etc. did carry a higher than average risk and there are localised factors which make make some areas slightly worse than others. The background levels of pollution in HK are enough of a concern, no matter where you live.
I find that TC, Eastern HK island, Sha Tin, Sai Kung all fare slightly better than the core urban areas at certain points during the year. That's about the best I could find. Myself I'm a DB'er

PHOTOHODGE - thanks for your information. I keep hearing conflicting reports about the pollution in TC and having an 8 month old son - its kinda scaring me off the place - altho the other positives of living there are still drawing me to the place.
The only other thing I'm concerned about is noise from neighbouring apartments - anyone have any views? Surely it can't be worse than listening to constant bloody renovations going on in my building! haha
Also, can you hear any of the reno's going on with the building of Phase 3???
