Southside - Where to live?

To the experts,

As a young family moving to Hong Kong in April/May, we would really like to live on the Southside and are currently very keen on Repulse Bay / Tai Tam. My partner works very long hours and would be commuting to Central, so Repulse Bay with good buses and taxi shares seems more attractive tho' expensive.

Tai Tam seems to offer better value for money but we are concerned about how long it would take for my partner to get to work.

What are both areas like in terms of paeditricians, doctors and local amenities?

Someone also mentioned Stanley.

Do any of you live in these areas and what are your thoughts?

Look at where your children will go to school and work around that.

Tai tam is good but not much there, you have to go into Stanley but its not far. Some complexes have mini buses that run directly to Central etc. Time to centrel approx 40 mins+

Stanley has most things and a good bus service, its frendly but can get crowded with visitors. Aprox time 40 mins

R, Bay had several doctors etc and supermarkets but very few retail shops and does not have the village feel you have in Stanley . Good bus links Approx 20 mins to town.

Shouson Hill...supermarket and thats it! but great to get into town..approx 15 mins. very peaceful and close to south island school

Thanks for all your advice. It really helps to get realistic travel times and not the one the Estate Agents tell you!

We have definitely ruled out Pokfulam. We prefer the southside.

Our son is only 7 months old so as long as we can get to play groups and amenities that's fine - dont have to worry about schools right now.

My husband is at his desk by 7am which means the shuttles in Tai Tam dont get to the office early enough and Stanley might be a bit too far, otherwise Tai Tam / Stanley. Unless we are missing something relating to transport.

Any other areas on Southside apart from REpulse Bay worth looking into?

Does anyone have any particular buildings in Repulse Bay that they would recommend?

Thanks for all the replies so far.

We are looking to stock up on items for our move which is a company relocation - What should we be stocking up on apart from nappies?

Hey Apprentice, have you considered Ap Lei Chau. A new property called Sham Wan Towers. Realistic times to Central: Early morning(before 7:30 am) 15 mins by Taxi, 20-25 mins by Bus. International Schools that are close by Kennedy School, West Island School, Canadian School to name a few.

There are some flats which are actually two flats converted to one. Great view, good facilities and space for children and pets. Supermarkets, Wet Markets and other shopping close by in Soth Horizons, Aberdeen.
