Family moving to HK

ORIGINAL POST

I am currently being recruited for a position in HK (central?) from Singapore and we are looking for some advice pertaining locations and schools.

International School: Highest concern

A commute: distance not a problem (train, ferry, etc...)

Area: Expat family area - not 25 anymore thus not into night life areas

Our neighbor recommended the New Territories but...

Any advice? (Note: of course the package has not been disclosed thus package not known)

Thank you in advanced!

I moved to HK from Singapore. Best to decide which school your children will go to fist then look at property in the the area.

Its a big change moving from Singapore to here but I would diffentanly recomend that you are on the island for the first year or so then move out.

We live on the southsiade and my children go to South Island and are having a great time.

E-mail if you need more advise

hey there, i moved from Singapore to HK too but without a family. However, I have a colleague who relocated with her family from Spore to HK too. She is now staying in Happy Valley area and putting her kids in Bradbury International School at Stubbs Road and they just take schoolbus to school. It's a british system so pretty similar to our Singapore education system. Hope it helps...

Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay has a huge expat community, but it does seem that most expats Kowloon side are British, Australian and Kiwis, whilst most Americans live on the Island. Have lived in Clearwater Bay for 4 years and wouldn't live anywhere else.

We are a young family with a 5 1/2 year old daughter studying at HKIS (American Curriculum). I agree that first you should consider which i.s. you'd want your child in and then decide where to live based on the school location. We live in the southside and are very happy.

My niece used to go to HKSI (HOng Kong Singapore International from K1 to P6). It is a great school. My niece is a local HK kid but she loved studying there,... and she is now studying in U.S. without any academic problem.

My recommendation...If you have never been to HK come to the island. The Territories are great and you get more space for you money there, however you are limited with the choices of schools and the xpat communites isn't as large as on the island. Spaces are limited in all the international school here as most people have their children on waiting list 1-2 year prior to entry but there is a school here for your child/children and you have many more options. Indulge yourself with the full experience of being an expat in Hong Kong, there is so much to do on the island and so many places to eatif you like to venture out and explore. Mid-Levels is a great place to start if you are going to be working near Central, once you get aclammated and know more about the island you can always move to the Southside as most families do or to the New Territories. Really it depends on whether you want to live in the city or in the suburbs..

Good Luck!!

Tung Chung - Carribean Coast. New developement. Pretty, green and facing see. Nice community. 20min train ride to Central. 10min to airport by taxi. Kids have plenty of space to run and play. Nice Clubhouse. (Kids will be very miserable in Midlevels). There is a nice kindergarden within the compound for up to 4Y and the older ones can go to Lantau International School. Rents are also 1/3 of HK island.

If you want to be on Hong Kong Island and yet find a peaceful place close to schools, conveniently connected by Public Transport (Not MTR), 20-25 mins from Central it is Pokfulam, Aberdeen, Ap Lei Chau. Some great properties have come up with all modern amenities, club house, childrens play area, swimming pool, gymnasium etc. To name a couple, Bel-Air in Pokfulam and Sham Wan Towers in Ap Lei Chau. Both are close to schools and conveniently located. And are swanky and well appointed.
