Newly wed couple looking for a cheap apartment for the price of around HKD2,000. We're just starting out and a little tight with the budget, we would like to look for a place anywhere in Hong Kong with very basic facilities requirements like clean toilet, small kitchen or pantry.

I would highly appreciate any suggestions or recommendations from you guys!! cheers

Friends found 400sf in a village house in Pui O village in Lantau for about that money. This is a 20 minute bus ride from the ferry at Mui Wo (buses are very frequent, though not luxurious!), from which there are a couple of ferries each hour to central. You feel as if you're not in HK - silent and near the sea - but there are a few laid back expats there. Get a Chinese speaker to write in Chinese for you "Can you help me find a flat for less than X per month?" and then show it to the shopkeepers or old folk playing mahjong in the village or in the nearby village of Tong Fuk.

Actually, we don't mind staying in a small apartment for as long as it is a descent place to live. For a couple starting out I think a room with private bathroom and a small pantry will do for the time being.

my friend is moving out by the end of month and it's 2000 sq ft with private toilet and a small pantry. The place is in Prince Edwards, 10 minutes walk from MTR station but it's quite noisy in the daytime. Let me know if you need more information.

sorry, it's 200 sq. ft, not 2000

Hi Chiara,

Could you tell me more about it? Well, we do need some furniture like chairs, table, sofa and bed. Is it partly furnished? How about electrical appliances? Does the pantry has any partition that separates it from the bedroom? Thanks

200 sq ft is REALLY tiny - you may be lucky to get your bed in the apartment - let alone any other furniture. You may have to forfeit the sofa in that size apartment. Couples I know who have lived in tiny apartments have had bunk beds to maximise space. Or look at IKEA's raised beds so you can use the floor space for other more useful activities.

oh thanks dimac4, we will definitely need those type of furnitures, or sofa bed.

Hi, I PMed you my reply, wondering if you received it. We can provide basic furnitures like double bed with mattress, clothes rack, air-conditioning, hot water heater, etc. Yes there is a partition between the pantry and the living area. Let me know if you need more info.

How long are you planning to stay for?

Hi Chiara,

Yes we do need those basic furnitures, we're planning to stay for a long period. I guess until we both can afford to move to a bigger place.

That sounds good to me, but I need to get back to you tomorrow to reconfirm. By the way, when is the flat available? Because at the moment my husband is not in HK and will be back here in 1 or 2 months time. How long would you be able to wait for us to move in?

wendy> If this place does not work out, you can also consider walking around some places and checking the windows of small neighbourhood agents, that is not the big names. The local agents often have rooms in their windows. I spotted one on the bus yesterday on my way to Causeway Bay. It was a little agent (sharing space with a money changer) which had a few in the window. One room on Hennessey Road in Wanchai was 120 sf at $2000. OK it's possibly too small for you two but it shows that if you walk around some of these neighbourhoods you may find something suitable. Also check the local supermarkets' noticeboards, another popular place for owners to advertise. It could be worth walking around Wanchai, Western or Kennedy Town over the long weekend.

Wow good advice, thanks Claire. I really don't where to go to or to look around. I will definitely do that this weekend. Thanks again.

you can PM me after you can confirm the time. The flat will be available next week and that's why i suggested Monday morning. I will be flying on the same afternoon so next Monday will be your only chance to take a look.

Hi Chiara, I could take a look at it tomorrow but my husband and I might not be able to move in just yet. As I've mentioned earlier, I have to wait for him to come back here before we could move in. He will be back here in HK around July. Would you be able to hold the flat for us? If not, that's alright with me, you could rent it to someone else. Cheers
