Just wondering,,,
I dont have a huge budget but for convenience would like to live close to the escalator
Cheapest way I can think to do it , without sharing , -- is to get a studio in an old chinese ( no security) 'walk up' building .
How much do you reckon that would cost. Just wondering because I have seen one that is 6 minutes from escalator , Its a gorgeous, furnished, studio with a small balcony. But the building itself is terrible and its on 7th floor! I think what they are asking is extortionate - I am just checking to see what you guys think that should be worth
Thanks!

With the death of separate "use it or lose it" housing allowances, many gweilo are now considering these and are bidding the prices up.
We rent out a 600 sq ft one behind Western Market. Five years ago we simply couldn't find a tenant at any price... even the local market stall holders turned up their noses at it for $3k per month because it is on a high floor and lots of low floor cousins were available. Then we decorated it (incredibly cheaply) in "French rustic" style and promptly rented it out to a young British lawyer (who likes its "charm" and the 11 minute walk to work in IFC) for $8.5k.
Do a couple of trial runs carrying your groceries up seven flights of steps on a sticky summer's day....

Thanks for your answer Burgundy. I really like the place I saw . The studio is gorgeous - but it is net 400 sq ft , and they are asking more then 12k!

$30 psf for a walk up! Wow! And there was me feeling guilty about charging our tenant $14.
But if you can't find anything else at the same price that you prefer, then - by definition - it's a fair price.
Do have a think about fire, though. In many buildings the top floor tenant uses the roof as a store and therefore padlocks the roof-top fire escape. And many older tenants will burn paper on festival days....

There's one listed under Properties for Lease on this site which is 650 sq ft for 10K on Shelley St with 100 sf terrace. So cheaper ones are around.

Thanks for replys! Think I will be offering less- can anyone suggest a fair price for a very nicely decorated and modern 400 sq ft studio flat, 7th floor walk up in a pretty terrible building ! about 7-8 minutes from escalator . There is an outside space , but to be honest I cant see myself using it , because of heat poloution and there is absolutley no view 1 Do spaces such as that add a huge amount to rent price normally ??

expat2> Have lived in a walk-in before the escalator was even a pipedream - it was at the top of Old Bailey Street and then up 6 flights of stairs. Although considerably younger then, I would not do it again. No security, the door into the building was often left open. No lighting in the stairway. No mains gas (had to order the bottled stuff and occasionally ran out). No one to fix the dodgy tv aerial. No one to clean the stairway which got pretty disgusting.
It's a pain to get anything delivered and you have to pay by the floor, so go for a fully furnished/equipped one. Of course, then it will be more expensive.
$12K seems a bit steep to me but you need to decide if you think it's good value for you. If you're not going to use the terrace area then it's possibly not. And yes, such a space will increase the rent. But then so will anything else the landlord can think of.

Thanks for all the replys- i did offer less but they didnt go for it .
If anyone has got something available around mid levels please let me know . Looking to move in asap so you have immediate tennent. Looking to pay around 10 - but would go to 12ish if the place was really worth it .
Studio / one bedroom/ walk -up or whatever else -- happy to consider all..

I agree with all the comments above. Renting a walk-up would be your worst nightmare, if you ever need to travel with suitcase!
You need to factor in security, cleanliness, convenience. Unless you do want to lose weight by walking up and down, I think there are more options out there for the same price!

You can still rent an apartment for less than 10k near the Escalator.
Some of them are quite decent and in new-ish buildings with elevators. You don't have to suffer walk-ups.
Try Flourish Agency on Mosque Street, right off the Escalator.
