My partner and I are relocating to HK in August. We have been advised to search for a serviced appartment on HK Island. How much should one be looking to spend on such an appartment and where? - Needs to be easily commutable to Kowloon.

Thanks Andy. Unfortunately, that's a little out of my price range. To start with my partner won't be working and so we will just be relying on my income. I'm still trying to get my head around exactly where to live. Some people have told me to live in Wan Chai (Lockhart Road) while others have told me to avoid this on pain of death. Some people have told me to get a place on or near Queens Road East... As an absolute HK virgin, I'm really starting to think I should just take whatever I can find and try it out for a month...?

Details are needed...
What is your budget? What kind of area are you looking for? Would you consider one around Kowloon? Which part of Kowloon will you be working in (i.e. is bus or MTR better)?
Lockhart Road in Wanchai has a number of "girlie" bars which is possibly why some people told you to avoid it.

Hi Claire, I will be working on Tai Kok Tsui Road in Kowloon, but have been focussing my attention on accomodation on Hong Kong Island (again at the advice of colleages who have already lived out there). For at least the first month I wouldn't be able to pay too far above $18,000 HKD. The message really is; the cheaper the better! ;o)

moveandstay.com is a good website to check out. I think their properties may be a bit more expensive than you are looking for but it will give you an idea.

Jon> HK island is more expensive for serviced apartments - as they say it's location, location, location. So you might have to do some additional commuting as the less expensive ones are further away from the CBD.
In Sheung Wan, and near the MTR, are W Studios and 338 Apartments. Further out from Sheung Wan is 111 High Street so a minibus/bus would be needed to get to the MTR.
In Wanchai, but not very near the MTR, is the Eaton House Wanchai Gap.
Further out is Grand Plaza in Kornhill, quite near the Taikoo Shing MTR but not near the "clamour" of Lan Kwai Fong. Near North Point MTR is the Harbour Plaza Hotel (it has serviced apartments).
And on the south of the island in Aberdeen is Portobello Lodge which would require something like a 20 mins bus ride to Central, quicker but more expensive by taxi.

Claire: Thanks alot for the advice. I had already applied to 338 & Eaton House & Harbour Plaza - I'm waiting to hear back from the first two and the Plaza was out of my price range. At this stage, I'm just willing to take whatever comes along. Thanks very much for all of your help!
