Looking for a place to live in HK
We are moving to Hong Kong next month. I've got a new job in Kowloon right down town. We are looking for a place to live not necessarily DT. We have 2 children (12 years old and 11 years old). We need 3 bedrooms. We have a very low budget to start. Any ideas? One of us will be in HK from July 26 to July 31 to scout for a place to stay and school for the children.

Which has priority: the children's school commute or your commute? What kind of school will you be look at? What kind of area do you want to live in? Would you be prepared for a longer commute for you and the kids if it means you have more space?
Not knowing your budget makes things difficult. For some people on fat expat packages, low is $50,000, for others it could be $10,000 or less. A three bedroomed place on HK island in a nice area in a secure building will be a lot more expensive than a three-bed place in the New Terrorities.
A place on HK island will be an easier commute to say Delia School of Canada, which has elementary and secondary schools. And not too bad a commute to Kowloon side.
A place in the NT with a bit more space will be a tougher commute for the kids - but some children here to commute for up to two hours each way to get to a specific school.
More details would really help here.

Thank you very much. I will wait that my husband gets there and find the school first.

Hi,
Claire's suggestion is good !
The first area I could think of is "Mei Foo" in Kowloon off down town but not yet quite New Territories. there is a subway station named "Mei Foo" and it's between 15 - 20 minutes ride from down town Kowloon "Tsim Sha Tsui" and less than 30 minutes to Hong Kong Island.
The best thing is that they got the Delia School of Canada in "Mei Foo", though perhaps this is less of an international school but definitely with international students. It is for sure more affordable than any of those upscale int'l school which could cost HK$50k - 100k easily !
Delia School Contact
Address: 80-86 Broadway, Mei Foo Sun Chuen, Kowloon

the Mei Foo estate is approx. 25 - 30 years old, many of the units got balcony especially the large ones with 3 bedrooms which is approx. 1200 sq ft to 1800 sq ft. there are some buildings facing out in the open which used to be sea view but now is all reclaimed lands full of bldgs !
Otherwise you may want to check the properties in Tung Chung (Lantau Island) & Tsing Yi which both got subway stations, convenient & affordable !
Good Luck !

there's also a large variety of international schools in the kowloon tong area. try the broadcast drive circuit. it is a nice, quiet area, convenient to downtown kowloon, shopping and the schools. i used to live there and went to an international school in the area. also, rental prices are not as high as the mid-levels etc. you should be able to find a 3-bedroom for around $20,000. good luck

Hey I am from Vancouver!
The first thing abou here is - this is not Canada and so the so-called big flat on aversge is not comparable to a small size unit in Canada, and on average a so-called 1,000+ square feet apartment will have 3 rooms (but you can imagine they are VERY SMALL and your master will probably equal the size of your bathroom in Canada....
If you want to have a swimming pool for only apartment residents, you will need a new building and with your budget that should be somewhere in Tung Chung, Tsing Yi, and Olympics. Otherwise you can think about Whampoa Garden in Hunghom, very near to Tsim Sha Tsui. Here is a website for you to consider http://www.centanet.com/ehome.htm
