For expats who have no housing allowance, is there any rule of thumb how much of your base salary (since bonus is variable) you should cap on accomodation? Is there such official statistics around?

I agree. my max will be 20%, on disposable income.

i guess this is quite a subjective question. i wonder whether there are pple who spend 50% of their pay on accomodation. anyone knows?

According to govt. stats the average household expenditure on housing is 31%. That figure varies with the quartile, the lowest quartile spending 33%, the second 31%, the third 29% and the highest quartile 20%.
HH expenditure on housing also varies by geographical area. HK island it's 35%, Kowloon 31% and NT is 27%.
The percentage for those in private housing, it's 35%.
(Relative standard error: 1.6%)

Thanks Claire. Is this based on post-tax income or gross income? It seems like Pumpkin's 35% is the norm! while i could afford to be a little more indulgent!
