I'm moving to Hong Kong for a year in Jan. to teach at Discovery Bay. I'm 27yr old single aussie girl who likes going out. I've heard i should live on Hong Kong island as discovery bay is quieter. I can really only afford $10000 per month. I have only 1 week to find a place when i arrive. What should i do??

Depending on what your lifestyle entails......

Discovery Bay is a nice place to live if you want a spacious flat, you get more for your money in Discovery Bay than you will on HK Island. The excitement and venture is on Hong Kong Island, the night life of LKF and Wanchai, shopping, being able to wander the street and find places and explore, something you may be into since you are a young single female. Discovery Bay is a 30 minute ferry ride from Central so it's not that bad, you just have to decide do you want to be close to work or social life. Not to say Discovery Bay doesn't offer that but HK is a broader base.

Just keep in mind if you want to live in HK Island, chances are you want to be accessible to the ferry, which will mean you will have to opt for a smaller place for your money or live away from Central which will then increase your commute to work..ie taxi/bus to ferry then ferry to DB.

Good Luck!!

You can get a lot more for your money on south lantau, with a ferry direct to Discovery Bay. In Mui Wo you could get an ok place for 10k definitely. Your only concern would be going out in the evenings but the ferries are regular and the social life there is pretty good.

Don't live in DB, it's a great place but you'll be bumping into kids when relaxing in the plaza with a beer. Your best bet is Central Mid Levels. You'll get a small pad 4-5 hundred sq ft for 10k. Live as close to the escalator as possible because you can use it on your commute to DB. I suggest Caine Road
