Hi I'm moving to Hong Kong in a few weeks time with my husband and two young children and am after advice on where we should set up house. My daughter will going to school in Kowloon Tong and my husband will be working pretty close by in Won Tai Sin. We would love a 3 bedroom place and have a maximum budget of $20,000. Also , we'd like to have a helper so I'm guessing we'll need an Amah's quarters. Somewhere that is child friendly would be great. eg, kids playgrounds nearby etc Any advice greatly appreciated as we don't want to be stuck for too long in a hotel.

Thanks!

Kowloon tong itself is pretty nice. it's one of the nicer neighborhoods in kowloon. Also Ho Man Tin. Clearwater bay and sai kung are expat favorites but Tai Po in New Territories can also be considered. A lot of middle to upper middle class with families live in tai po because it has better air quality and is convenient by public transportation.

We moved to HK 8 weeks ago and have settled in Park Island on Ma Wan. We have two kids, 6 and 7 years old and they really love it here. We looked around HK quite extensively and couldn't find anything that compared. We pay $14.5K and have a brand new apartment, 1000 sqft, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, an amah's room and 3 fantastic club houses to choose from. There is a supermarket, doctor, day spa and numerous other facilities on the island. Our kids were zoned for school in Kowloon Tong but because we both work in Central they will go to school there. The transport all over HK is very efficient and I am sure if we were zoned for KT there must be other kids here that go to school there already. There are so many children here of all ages that our kids just love it. There is a free indoor playroom inside one of the club houses that the kids all meet at every evening and they make friends so quickly. Initially I was not keen to move somewhere that was isolated but Park Island has been my saving grace. Coming home at the end of the day is so refreshing and it is so nice to know that my kids are not only happy but also incredibly safe. There is room to run and plenty of things to do. Also we have money left at the end of the month to put towards a family holiday. It is definately worth considering.

I believe all the above suggestions are good, but in particular, I like krasykat's.

I have lived in Hong Kong many-many years and recently visited Park Island for the first time. Because it's a new development, I wanted to see what everyone was talking about. I was very impressed. Is it correct, krasykat, that you actually have a choice of ferry or bus on and off the island? I think I remember seeing buses there. We took the ferry.

I believe you can get further information on Park Island in Hong Kong by Googling. I think the first time I saw Park Island was in fact in the Internet.

Good luck on your search. Hong Kong is number one for having the best public transportation in the world. Everything everywhere is reasonably easy to get to.

Yes there are two ferries, one to central 20 mins and $14 and another to Tsuen Wan. Not sure of cost or time. I think it takes about 10 to 15 mins. There are buses to Tsing Yi and Kwai Fong MTR stations and the airport. All transport is 24 hrs. I initially thought that because everything was on an island that things would be expensive but it is really cheap. We have met many other xpats here and they all agree that the facilities are excellent. It is amazing how much there is here. Most facilities are often very quiet, it's incredible that they manage to maintain such an amazing level of service. The management company and security here is amazing and we have always been made to feel really welcome. If anyone wants more information or wants to come and have a look around please PM me and I will be happy to help.

Definitely sounds like something I'll have to check out. Kyasykat, I've PM'd you with a few questions too! Space for my children is very important, as is the chance to make friends and play areas.

What is the name of your complex? I have looked online but don't seem to be coming up with much. We are living in KTong and whilst is is very nice, i like the idea of somewhere a bit more open. My only concern is that my daughter goes to school in KTong, so obviously the travel each day bothers me, especially as she is very young. thanks!

check out www.parkisland.com.hk it's not a very informative web site so if you would like PM me and I can email you some family photos of our apartment and the complex. I know ESF in KT have a school bus from the Tsing Yi station and PI have a shuttle to Tsing Yi that takes about 10 - 15 mins, so the commute would be a easy one.
