buy on hk island

i've lived in kowloon (homantin) for many years and would like to move to hkisland.


I would like to go somewhere near a playground and a supermarket which caters more for western tastes, i also prefer low density and with easy access to mtr (asking too much?). in 2005 we did see many places in midlevels west, and tai hang road but decided to stay on kowloon due to greenery in homantin and also the apt was cheaper than on hkisland.


i have been shopping at taste at festival walk where i can buy most foods that i want but now i think its just too far to go (especially when i just want to get a thing or two) and also thinking of schools for my 1.5 year old to go in the future (i "feel" that hkisland will be much better than kowloon).


i would be grateful for any advice where on HKisland would be good.

You may want to take a look at Baguio Villa in Pokfulam.


Pokfulam is a relatively low density area, close to several international schools, easy bus/taxi transportation to Central and other parts of HK (no MTR -- yet). There is a grocery store (Park N Shop International) directly in lower Baguio Villa, plus playgrounds, swimming pools and tennis courts in both lower and upper Baguio. From lower Baguio, Cyberport is just across the street. Cyberport has movie theatres, restaurants, ATMs, PO, Le Meridian Hotel plus club, plus a beautiful park-by-the-sea (very dog and child friendly). Although prices are pretty similar to Mid-Levels, I believe you get much better value in Pokfulam.


There are many other old and new apartment blocks to look at in Pokfulam including Scenic Villa (similar to Baguio Villa) and the newly completed very upscale Bel Air (great first class amenities). Further, there are many low-rise older colonial style apartment blocks.

i have considered pokfulam before, but i thought there was too much traffic, far away from downtown and noisy from the barges for the apt closer to the sea. i thought baguio was a bit too old and that's what also deterred me from the low rise older colonial apt blocks ( i like greenery garden tho that's more on mount davis).

I spent the first 8 years in Hong Kong living in Mid-Levels -- Po Shan Road, which is the furthest point west in Mid-Levels. I loved it and couldn't imagine living anywhere else. And like you, I had this thought that Pokfulam was the other side of the world -- much too far from Central. I have since lived in Pokfulam the last 6 years and can't imagine living anywhere else. Although I love Baguio Villa for just about every reason I can think of, I have to admit Mount Davis Road is extremely charming and, since every kilometer counts, it is closer to Central. It's not even all that far from The Belcher's Super Wellcome, which is a massively huge grocery store. But what I like about Baguio Villa is that it has its own little center of the universe. Buses start their routes here and in the morning there are express buses that leave every 15 minutes up until 9am. To tell the truth, it takes about the same amount of time to get to Central from here as it did from Po Shan Road in Mid-Levels.


But, having said all that, there are so many beautiful places to live on Hong Kong Island -- Happy Valley, Repulse Bay, Stanley, Mid-Levels, The Peak... and so many other great areas.

I've lived in Mid Levels for 5+ years have loved it.


Close to my office in Wanchia, can walk down to Central, shuttle bus down to Admiralty MTR and Pacific Place. Wellcome and ParknShop Supemarkets....BUT....things have changed over the past few months.


Seems a lot more people in the street, more cars and getting difficult to get a taxi to work in the morning.


Might pay you to visit the area at peak times to get a 'real' feel for the area.

If you are buying in Hong Kong, Sheung Wan which is right next to Central has lots of Character and the price is still below Midlevel. Buying a residence should be a mid to long term commitment which will convenient your child's schooling, first of all. There are a few well known Western school in the area.
