How early to start looking?

Hi there,

Wondering if anyone can advise how far ahead I should start looking for rental apartments? How early should I start engaging an agent? For example, in NYC where I live now, you would start looking a month in advance of your move date and agents are pretty much walk-ins.

I plan to move to HK in Oct and would like to find something in Happy Valley.

Thanks!

I'd suggest you stay in a serviced apartment for a month or two so you dont have to rush into any long term lease - and also to get a feel for the best area of the city to live. I lived in Happy Valley for almost 10 years - other than a tough time getting cabs to work at times, its excellent.

Thanks for the info. I will be staying in a serviced apartment for a little when I arrive.

How early do people usually start looking for a rental place before their target move-in date? I have an opportunity to come to HK before the actual move and would like to utilize that trip to look - just need to know when would be a good time? 1 month? 3 months?

Thanks!

Smart choice with Happy Valley it's a great place to live. A month is about right, 3 months is too long as most landlords will not wait 3 months for someone to move in. Good luck with your move.

Agreed about a month to start looking - once you find a place you like pretty much they want you to sign and move in straight away, generally you are shown "vacant" flats so landlords don't want to leave them empty for any longer than they need to

Suit yourself in a hotel suite for a month/couple and at the same time find a space elsewhere. Get more feeling of the place you wanna live and then rent it. Undoubtedly Happy valley is a nice place to live.
