I just received notice of being laid off - trouble is I have a large rented apartment - I have to get out of it, will my landlord sue me for the cost if he can't re-rent it? Can I cut and run but if so, will he pursue me?

Legally he can try and make you pay out for the remainder of your lease, chances are he won't as it is time consuming to pursue it in court, and will just be keeping your two month deposit. How much longer do you have with your lease, is there a break lease clause and do you have the time to post it here on this website's property break lease apartments?

Yes you can cut and run, BUT yes he can persue you even it he does re-rent it. Depending on the rental amount it is not that expensive to persue through the courts and from recent experience chances are he will persue. It really is not worth it so speak to your landlord and try and come to some agreeable arangement. Good Luck!

Don't cut and run - speak to your landlord - not all HK landlords are tyrants! Tell him your situation and asvise him ... also - speak to your employer as if they relocated you to HK, they may have the burden of your lease .... there will be alot more of this in HK soon - you're not alone !

Find a new tenant for your landlord. I also suggest speaking to your landlord.
