Does anyone have a good realtor to recommend for Tai Po rental property? We are considering a relocation from HK Island to reduce expenses and heard Tai Po is very convenient in terms of daily commute to Central via MTR. Thanks!

I have just answered your thread in living about China!
OK, here's the thing. I think you need to start to get out and look at these areas. Tai Po, like every other area in HK, has many real estate agents and the big ones, Centaline, Midland, Ricacorp, Century 21, et al are all there. Decide what type of place you want to be in, Tai Po has a mix of older high rises, newer low(er) density places and village houses. Some of the village house areas are lovely some are horrible. All this is spread across quite a large area some of which is convenient for MTR some of which is not. I personally like the Tai Po environment, others do not.
Going south you have Shatin which again is a mix of housing but more expensive although much more convenient for the commute. You can consider Sai Kung although no rail there, Ma On Shan or going over west Tsuen Wan (much older area but expat pop is growing quickly), Park Island, Gold Coast, etc, etc. I think you really need to go and see these areas before you commit.

Thanks! Going to Tai Po in the morning on a scouting trip. Looking forward to it.

Tai Po is one of the few places in HK on a train line that has a big city with all the shops yet is still close to the ocean and has lots of open green space nearby. And I just read yesterday that Tai Po has some of the best air quality in Hong Kong.
As you asked for real estate agents - what kind of place are you looking for? For a flat in a building, there are lots of agents with their offices clustered in the middle of Tai Po as evildeeds mentioned. If you are looking along Ting Kok Road in the area between Tai Po Centre and Tai Mei Tuk then the agents in Tai Mei Tuk usually are more knowledgeable about what's available.
I live in a village house near the seaside and love it. Having lived in flats in HK Island and Kowloon, we are really enjoying the fresh air, privacy, and our garden. It's a relief to come back home every day.
There's a direct bus from Tai Po to Central via Wanchai, which is faster than the KCR.

Thanks Denisiel.
Tai Po yesterday was good! We picked up a willing agent in the Uptown Plaza who showed us 2 units at Grand Palisades. We prefer older colonial style (i.e. taller ceilings, larger rooms, more character) than the new complexes, although we would love to find something with a pool for our child. Anyway, am returning later next week so that the agent has sufficient time to get a full day of viewings lined up.
Since we don't have a car (and will not get one), we do want to be close to various transportation options so that's why we thought we needed to be close to the train station. I don't know much about Tai Po yet and will look into the Tai Mei Tuk area (is that where older units are?).
Ma On Shan was also suggested to me as an option....does anyone know anything about that area? I saw on the MTR site the location, it seems perhaps farther in terms of a commute to Central daily....??

Thanks Patrick, but I have heard the contrary re: the commute, that MOS is shorter to Central via train or bus than Tai Po. We took the 307 yesterday from TP to Wanchai and while once on, very convenient, the frequency of the buses was a little worrying, maybe M-F the frequency is increased.
Any thoughts from anyone on Tai Wai?

Glad you liked Tai Po and yes the bus is more frequent on the weekdays - can be as frequent as every 7-8 minutes during rush hour. Check here for the 307 bus schedule:

Along Ting Kok Road there are many villages with houses and gardens that are quite reasonable. But you have to add 10-25 minutes for the minibus that travels along Ting Kok Road to take you to the 307 bus stop. I take the bus to HK Island a few days a week and don't mind the extra commute because the living environment is worth it. However sounds like you will be better off in a high rise building around Tai Po Centre if you would like a complex with a pool.
There are a lot of real estate agencies along Chui Lok Street.
I lived in Ma On Shan for a year and prefer Tai Po - better bus and train connections and much better shopping. In addition to the Hong Lok Yuen store, Tai Po Centre has a Park n' Shop Superstore, Jusco, and Megamall with all the usual clothing and electronic shops. And since you have a child, you may like the bike lanes and nearby hiking areas. Supposed to be building a white sand beach at Lung Mei this year too.
