Hi there,
Would really really appreciate some advice on setting up a new business here in Hong Kong. I was recently let go by my previous employer, and they are continuing to sponsor my visa (I'm a UK national) until such time as I find new employment or leave HK permanently. However I have an idea for a new business that I'd like to start up here.
1. Will I be able to renew my current visa for the purpose of starting a new business?
2. It's not a bar but I would need a liqour license. Are these very hard to acquire? What kind of restrictions are there on the premises where I could sell liqour? I assume I can't just find any empty office space?
3. What are setup costs likely to be in respect of registering the business and completing all the government docs?
I have many other questions too but let's start there!
Thanks in advance.

thanks johnnie. By government docs I simply mean anything related to registration of the company, filing mem & arts etc. $3k is pretty cheap, good to know.
This is really the initial research stage, no plans to make any big moves until things pick up a bit. I suspect there'd be a pretty long lead time with getting the licenses I need though, so even if I wanted to I'm guessing I couldn't make anything happen for at least 6 months anyway.

Realistically, the setup costs would be in the region of $10,000 to register the business and complete all the government docs properly.

Hi SiB,
According to the Liquor Licensing Board, you need to be licensed before starting up a new business in HK. “Jardine Johnnie’s reply that setting up a company can be as cheap as $3,000” just refers to applying for the Business Registration certificate. This would be an unlimited liability company and should anything go wrong later, you could find yourself with serious liabilities. You would be better off setting-up a HK company with limited liability for approximately $10,000. We would recommend “A-Swiss Corporate Services Limited” who could assist your HK company establishment. Please refer to http://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/directory/business-financial-services.
