Thinking of moving to Tong Chung, Lantau

Can someone shed some light on the airport noise level in Tong Chung? We're considering renting in Tong Chung and noticed there are a few clusters of buildings. Are passing airplanes audible from within the apt? Many thanks for any comments/suggestion you may have. Cheers to all.

the noises from the airplanes are barely audible with the windows shut. even with the balcony doors open (we are airport facing), the noise is not that bothersome. it is a bit noisier if the planes are taking off from the south runway, but most of the time the south runway is used for landing.

you will also get a few helicopters every day, a bit noisier but in short bursts only. my toddler loves the activity from the window, we can see almost every mode of transport in HK (including cable car) except trams.

How about the dreaded pollution (bad air quality)? Is it just on specific days? Or is it really bad in there?

The "Tung Chung is the most polluted place in HK" deserves a spot in the urban legend hall of fame. Before moving here I actually pulled all the hourly data going back several years into Excel and charted it out. Long story short, on bad days it's bad everywhere, but TC has many more low pollution days than many other places that you'd think would have it beat. The worst part about it might be the power plant over on the Tuen Mun / Gold Coast side... if the wind is not going your way you can get that nitrogen dioxide smell (which some people can't even notice but hits me like a ton of bricks). The best way I can describe it is saying that it smells like any Pearl River Delta factory city.

Ted, there were news items on newspapers some time ago telling Tung Chung residents not go out and do exercices, and for those with with respiratory problems to stay home with closed windows. One of the reasons given was the high level of pollutants coming from Guangdong factories carried over to Hong Kong and Tung Chung is the "gateway".

In addition to that, some residents suffer "asthma" attacks although there's no official numbers on that. It would be interesting to see whether there is official reports from the government on this. You know, comparison of patients with respiratory problems by district in Hong Kong.

Ah yes the fair and balanced HK media... ever ready to pounce on the hot story. That should have been around the same time that TC broke the "record" (since beaten by Central) of over 200. Even funnier was that I was in DB at the time and it was laughable that people were talking about being thankful for not living in TC... as if the air a few miles away would be radically different. I think one of the green groups had some explanation of the effects of the air flow and why TC is so horrible, but my own observations of living in TC and working in Central, plus the EPD data, just don't jive w/ the story. That or I have some incredible lungs.

That would indeed be interesting to see some data on problems by location, though I think it would be hard to get it out of the Hospital Authority.
