Sharing a flat.. Subletting.. is it legal?

Check your Tenancy Agreement. It will probably state that sub-letting is not allowed, most of them have this clause. If yours contains such a clause, then sub-letting is not legal because you have signed a contract.

"Subletting" usually means the original (primary) tenant no longer lives in the apt. Having a flatmate is not prohibited. In terms of what you charge your flatmate, be reasonable and keep it between the two of you.
