Hi, I have a couple of home made sauces that I want to bottle and sell in the local grocery markets, does anyone have previous experience with this type of business or know how I can find a company to help me manufacture my product on a smaller scale? Also, do I need any kind of food license to do this? Please help me with any information you think is relevant to my situation. Thanks for your help.

It is my understand from people I know who have worked for or sell to the two big chains that this is quite a complicated and very expensive procedure.

Shelf space is limited in HK and I believe that they will want significant upfront commitments to stock a product - so you'd have to be well backed + you'd need to have very strong confidence that you can sell enough to make back the minimum commitment.

Perhaps other members have more specifics...

Hi Ed,

Can you please give me a ball park number as to how much we are talking about? Are these "people" distributors? I realize it is going to be difficult getting my product into the bigger chains, so I want to target the smaller specialty stores and grow from there. My question now is how to get the product produced on a small scale, but obviously something bigger than making it from my own kitchen. Thanks for your input though.

Sorry I dont know much about this other than I was told there are substantial funds required to get space in the big chains... perhaps try googling the subject and you will find more info...

What kind of sauces are they ?

I reckon you could find someone to make the sauce for you, that's the easy bit. As Ed says getting into the big chains will be tough. The best way to sell them would be to get them into the independent shops, and get some restaurants using them. Either that or sell them online yourself. Take an advert on here.

If the demand is there the big chains will come to you.

Actually that's the problem I have right now, it's finding someone a local company who can help me develop the sauce so that it's shelf life is longer than my homemade recipe and manufacture it for me. My problem is two folds, one it's finding a company who will do this on a smaller scale and secondly, I believe there's nothing like it on the market right now so my concern is trusting this manufacture not to run to the bank with my idea. Any thought on how I can go about this?
